Fuel stops between RNO and LWS

Fuel stops between RNO and LWS

Any one know of good fuel stops between Reno and Lewiston ID. Flying the amphib Supercub up but even with the stellar speed I think I will need to stop for extra go juice. No auto fuel, need the expensive stuff 100LL.

I don't have an answer to your question, but am curious what speed you get? What is your horsepower? Thanks. Steve

I have an O-360 180hp. Hangared in Carson City elv.4,700. with DA in the summer near 8,000. Ground speed on the gps 91-93 kts at 2350-2400rpm. It is a wide body with the thrust line mod. On rebuild we kept the weight out. Also running a wood prop. BIG Improvement.

Okay, I confess my ignorance here: Why is a wood prop a BIG improvement? I know they look beatiful, but how do they affect performace?

As for fuel stops? I love 'em. They can give you a chance to catch a little of the local flavor & folks, that would be missed when just flying over.

And besides the three most useful things in aviation: Airspeed, airspeed, & airspeed. - The three most useless things in aviation are: runway behind you, altitude above you, and air in your fuel tanks.

If you are just flying straight, probably the best bet is Burns Municipal, KBNO. Looks to be about half way. They have an old police cruiser they will loan you to get into town if you want a bite to eat (if no one is around, the keys are in a little basket in the lounge).

www.100LL.com is showing the gas price at $4.25/gallon. If you can get a little further to La Grande, KLGD, www.100LL.com is showing gas at $3.90/gallon. Haven't flown in there though.

Have fun up there. As I have mentioned on this site before, I grew up outside of Grangeville and always had fun hunting Chukar on the Salmon River breaks.

375handh Thanks for the info. I will call the people up there tomorrow and see if they are around on Sunday. The other route that looked good was Winnemucca then up to the Ontario area. Burns looks to be a little more direct. Only down side is the route to Burns dose not have as much water around. Been going up to Idaho for the past 15 years for the opener and we always have a fantastic time. Drawback is it's too hot for the dogs.

Berk. the wood prop works great for our environment. Using a fixed pitch is all about compromise. For the lakes around Tahoe we get the best out of a 80" 45 wood prop. We have tried many combinations and this one works as good or better than the rest.

The gas at Burns is self-serve and the lounge, to the best of my knowledge, is always open. If you have time, the guy that owns the FBO has a really beautiful, completely restored Beaver.

I think if you go the Winnemucca, Ontario route, you'll have a lot more big mountains and backcountry. Not all bad, but north central Idaho has had a lot of forest fires that have really reduced visibility.

Great info, thank you. Nice to know about self serve. Self serve helps when you want a quick turn. Although in a supercub you try not to use the word quick.

I've flown my PA-18-150 with a Borer prop home to Grangeville several times. Generally get a TAS of 95 MPH. Problem going across the desert is the wind. July 2005 I went Santa Rosa direct to McCall with a stop in Alturas for gas (which is a great place to stop). Did about 125 MPH ground speed from Alturas to McCall. Did about 80 MPH ground speed on the way back. The gas at Alturas was starting to look pretty good.
