Fuel Tank Anatomy Question

Fuel Tank Anatomy Question

We are trying to get all of our flying club members on the same page regarding the refueling of our aircraft and I want to make sure that we are using the right terminology. Since there is a lot of diverse experience in our ranks here, I thought I'd get input from all of you.

Two of our aircraft have, what the AFMs call fuel filler necks or tabs, for reduced fuel capacity. No questions there.

The other two are older aircraft (Cessna 182 and 172) that do not have these filler necks/tabs. The do have a short, stubby cylinder that extends from the top of the tank only an inch or two, similar to what the filler neck/tabs look like, just much shorter and are not used for a POH determined reduced fuel capacity indicator.

My question is, when one refers to collars, is it this short, stubby cylindrical piece or is it what the fuel caps attaches to? I've always understood the collars to be what the fuel cap attaches to. Of course I could be wrong. So give me your thoughts and insight.

A collar has to go around something (technically around a neck), or it's not a collar.

I'm having trouble visualizing the parts you are describing. Sadly, I haven't filled up in awhile. Anyway, you don't specify if the short, stubby cylinder is extending into or out of the tank. No matter. If it's around something else, it's a collar. If it's not around something else, and it's extending out of the tank, then it's a neck. If it's not around something else, and it sticks into the tank, then it's a ... ummm... inlet pipe thingy. I'm always glad to share my vast technical knowledge! :D

If you are trying to keep the planes at a set level below full, A fuel stick works well. The CAP 182's that I fly have a set amount of fuel, you just dip the tanks and fill according.

I think the one I have is a fuel-hawk, or something like that.

I have two, one's a Sherman-Wlliams & the others a Pittsburgh.

Ha ha--paint sticks work too, but the clear tubes make it pretty simple.
