Hi Country that looks like a decent set up you have. Thanks for the picture. Also thanks for keeping us posted on your progress. Interesting NSP contacts you've made can't answer your questions. Maybe they only apply to commercial vehicles or aren't really enforced?

gas-approved tanks

I called Aluminum Tank, Inc. (ATI) from Adventure Seaplanes' post and got a good price on a tank that is DOT-approved to transport gasoline, and not just diesel. All the other tank folks I called said their tanks weren't approved to haul gas. No problem unless you get stopped by fuzz. One company said they could get gas-approved tanks from another company and would call back with a quote. I'm buying a 38-gal aluminum tank from ATI for $300 (scratch/dent price) plus about $45 for UPS freight to Georgia. The alum tank only weighs 55 lbs. I'll end up getting the pump, hose, filter and nozzle from JM Ellsworth (jmesales) or Tractor Supply. I got the smaller tank so it takes up less room in my truck bed. If I need extra gallons, I'll haul a couple extra 5-gal plastic jerry jugs and dump them into the alum tank, then use the pump and hose. Most of the time, 38 gallons is plenty for me to refuel. Thanks to everybody who offered tips. Should be set up in a couple weeks. Alum.Tank,Inc. phone number is 863-401-9474. They're located in Winter Haven, FL. Ask for Robert.

Keep in mind when buying hoses, etc to be sure to get ones with a built in static wire to disipate static charge. Some hose is sold without the wire.

Hey guys I finally got an answer on my tank from Sgt. Wagner of the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier division.
According to CFR 49 171.2 as I am NOT in the commercial business my 76 gallon tank on the trailer is legal. If I was in any type of commercial business...like hauling fuel to my charter airplane, including farming...this type of tank would not be legal. Since it is less than 119 gallon I need no placarding either. Nebraska by law uses the federal regulations

Man this was a booooger of a question to get answered!

When in doubt, check your local state laws, don't just take someone's opinion check with someone who really knows the local regs.

Guess what?.....If I had been a commercial operator, and wanted to haul fuel this way, get a 55 gal drum that has been certified..probalbly from your local bulk distributor. I just bought one to haul used oil for $5...go figure.
