Garmin 196 vs 296

Is the 296 worth the extra $500?

Have done a search and read the posts. Anything new to contribute?

Which has the better screen / readability? I Do not need/want terrain avoidance info supplied by 296.

Thanks for this forum. It is a great resource!

I am very happy with my 196. I fly VFR all over the northeast US and have never felt I needed more features than what the 196 has.

I use the backlit screen a lot. You can keep it on by pressing the power button, adjust the brightness and then press the enter button.

Of course I would probably be happy with the 296, 396 or 496. The question is would I actually use the more advanced features they each have? For my type of flying, I doubt it.

I added Pilot MyCast to my cell phone for the weather. That is a nifty program! Between it and the 196 I am usually ready to roll!
