Garmin 3-496 alternative?

https://www.bendixking.com/AV8OR/

Seems to do the same things plus some extra multimedia features as the garmin units for $720?

Can get a Gizmo panel mount for it too. http://www.skygeek.com/airgizmos-bendix ... -dock.html

Any thoughts?

Re: Garmin 3-496 alternative?

I had looked at it when I attended Oshkosh. Looks like a nice unit. But I went with the AvMap EKP-IV. I liked the bigger screen and as I have gotten older it is hard to see the smaller screens while getting bounced around.

I've been looking at the bendixking and the Anywhere Map ATC.
Anywhere comparison

I keep leaning toward the Anywhere Map. The above comparison says you can get free TFR's and SFR's w/ web access.

I've got a AV8OR. Bought it this spring.

I really like it but there are a few issues. The data base kinda sucks; some airspace is missing, missing airports (mostly private ones but they are on the sectional). There have been a few times when it has been couple miles off when telling me where I am, perhaps an external antenna would fix it. There is a software update that I have not done yet and I haven't updated the data base since I bought it so those issues may be solved. I wanted a VSI in the gps and thought the AV8OR had one but is dosen't...probly better I don't know what my climb rate is, don't want to be disappointed. Overall I think it is a good deal, I like it and don't plan to replace it. one more thing, the battery only lasts ~1.5 hrs.

Thanks for the input. I was wondering when Mr. Burson was going to chime in......

Just wish there was a way to put the PC in the panel. That shot where you are flying over Lake Powell is what I am looking for when it comes to terrain mapping.

Re: Garmin 3-496 alternative?

The shot over Lake Powell is a standard sectional chart view. But it moves =D> The Flight Prep software has a terrain screen and a HITS, highways in the sky screen. I did not show them.

Flight Prep has to many features for me to explain, I encourage you to go to there web site.

Flight Prep software also has Flight Guide integration capabilities. I have it and love it.

Re: Garmin 3-496 alternative?

cool stuff rob! seems a little large, but a lot of info at your fingertips. i use a 396 with wx, and an mx-20 in the dash with terrain and such...sometimes it is just nice to turn it all off! prefer the 396 by itself at night, but i run 'em both
if i'm headed over the top to mccall in the dark...you are right on the love/hate part...

I use this one, the FL190. Can be too big if you have limited panel space.

Anyone using this GPS? Looks like a great little GPS and at 549 the price is in my range.
