Garmin 396/496 Questions/Information???

I'm missing the Compass Overlay on my 396. Is there any Garmin 396 experts here that can help me?? Just trying to save a phone call to Garmin. (edit on 12-21-09, Before anyone calls me a moron  , the correct terminology should have been "Navigation Arc", not "Compass Overlay"  ) (But, got it all figured out)

The only thing I did recently was update the Obstacle and NavData Databases. I did not update the Terrain because I didn't think it was necessary.

I can not find any information about this issue in the Owners Manual.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Thanks for the reply, Hafast!

I tried all 5 of the Page Layout options and the Compass Overlay still doesn't come up.

Re: Any Garmin 396 Expects Here??

The key here is that the map orientation must be set to "Track Up" in the Set Up Map menu page. Then, choose the Set Page Layout from the menu page and choose the Overlay option.

Navigation arc, or compass overlay does not show if you are set to North Up orientation.

Re: Any Garmin 396 Experts Here??

When I was in partnership on the previous 182B, Chuck wanted track up on our pannel gps. I got tired of changing it to north up so I flew track up always.

Now with the latest 182B, I have a 396 and always have north up. A much superior, in my mind way of getting the picture in you head. No compass overlay needed cus north is at the top of screen where it belongs.

I'm with you Tim, north up always seems more logical to me. Steve

Re: Any Garmin 396 Experts Here??

I did start off with "North Up" when I first got the unit. I myself liked it that way too for the first few flights. But, then switch to "Track Up" to get the Navigation Arc and then just got used to it. Some how the set up got changed recently and I had a brain fart and couldn't figure the problem out on my own
