WOW  . My 396 works just fine. I would spend $3300.00 on other things. Fuel for one. LED nav lights with wing tip, tail & belly strobes for second. Finally, Pulse landing lights! (you know us truckers, we're into lots of lights). Maybe tail fin lights like the airliners, too  .

Thanks for the video Trev.

Actually, it's a very cool unit! Love the terrian profile window!! Now I can see why it's big bucks.

I wish they'd put that joysticky/knobby thing on the 496 for entering airport identifiers.

Other than that, this looks like basically a 496 with a bigger screen. Meh.

Trev, the video was great. Thanks! It seems it also has the traffic collison avoidance but it does not say that it hooks up with the ZOAN XRX like the 396. The big benefit is the larger screen for us old farts who's vision has diminished over the years. I have my 396 set up with a RAM suction cup so that it is off to the left of my head for good vision. :D I would still be anti yoke mount but RAM has some useful products.

You can pulse your landing lights now for less than $200 and less than an hours work, anf it weighs less than an ounce. phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3029

That thing looks huge. Does it come with a strap to use as a kneeboard? Don't know where I would mount it... :?:

RAM mounts has some possibilities for mounting.

Also Zaon users there will be a new connector made so you can use your XRX
For TCAS.

OK all you legal gurus out there...

How the hell does Garmin get by loading a handheld GPS with Jepp enroute and terminal charts, after all the years of telling us that that would never happen, and if you want IFR GPS it has to be panel mount and certified.

Disclaimer: Old Gump would never use a handheld GPS for IFR enroute or terminal operations. Honest Injun, you betcha.

They don't display the "little plane" on the approach charts, so it's basically an electronic copy of the paper chart in that mode.

Apparently and not surprisingly, the subscriptions for the IFR charts are pretty steep, too.

Do they display the 'little airplane' on the IFR enroute charts? That makes more sense, because the IFR enroute charts are drawn to scale - the plan view on approach plates isn't.

Not that I'd ever use it for anything other than 'enhancing situational awareness'. No sir. Not me.

Nope, there are geo-referenced electronic approach plates out there. www.flightprep.com displays your aircraft's position directly on the approach plate. Want to shoot a DME arc? Just keep the little blue airplane on the approach plate on the arc line and your dead on. Easy as a video game. I want to think that inside of the inner ring on the plan view is to scale, but it's been a long time since I passed an Oral.

The charts that are displayed are the NACO FAA charts not the jepp charts with no geo refrence ability (no little airplane) The Jeppesen information is the same as the other handhelds with waypoints, intersections,VOR's etc. It does have airways (finally) They are a Garminized version of the jepp enroute charts.
