Garmin database manager

I bought a new to me plane. It has a Garmin 430w in it & I want to install/reinstall a new updated database into it. After buying the USA ($488.00) database, Garmin says I have to use their database mgr to download the db onto my SD cards.

What they didn't say at the onset is I HAVE TO HAVE windows 10 to d/l & install the db through their manager program. The old db was from 2015 & never updated/used. I don't have win 10 & don't need/want it. I'm Win 7 pro/64bit and have SW that will not migrate to win 10 much less buy new SW that can use win 10. I don't know anyone using win 10 I can get to use their machine.

Does anyone have a workaround? The Garmin Tech was unable to get anything to work (45 minutes of trying) The Garmin files are only around 200meg but their "manager" isn't at all friendly with my Win 7 Pro.

Re: Garmin database manager

As a Mac user I've encountered this back in the past. A non-tech workaround I've used is to have the update run at an avionics shop for a fee, assuming they could access the download that you already paid for?

Re: Garmin database manager

One of several reasons I despise Garmin business practices.

Do you have a Garmin dealer anywhere near?

Maybe a computer repair outfit?

This stuff is just BS.

Install a virtual machine?
*easiest option if your computer is somewhat powerful

Find a older version of the software?
430 is much older than window$ 10

Maybe see if jepp has a database and install software that will work on your machine and get a refund from garmin?

Re: Garmin database manager

Thanks all.. I have a Garmin listed dealer (2) close & sorta close to me. I'm just po'd I'd have to do a dog & pony show to load <200 meg files to the tune of $488.00.
Anyone have a suggestion to replace the 430w? I'm just short hopping around SE Wa. state but would still like to have a similar type instrument in the plane.

Depends on what you use it for, even today in that form factor a 430W is very hard to beat and is a very fast box once you learn it

Could be worse, as I remember the 1yr subscription for a PC12’s Honeywell system is like $10,500.00

Are you in Benton City, WA? I'm in Richland and have a Windows 10 PC. Are you actually flying IFR? I've got an old Garmin 296 with an ancient database, and use an Ipad to keep charts current...

The Avidyne 440 is a direct slide in replacement for the 430. Its a great unit, and Avidyne will give you something on trade in. A few years ago I got 5K off the list price, today I think the max trade in value is $2000.

Cheers,

Re: Garmin database manager

I would not spend a dollar trying to save a dime. Buying a windows 10, or a mac which is also supported would be WAAAAY cheaper than replacing that GNS unit with anything, including an avidyne unless there's a real good reason to do that.

You can get a low end windows 10 laptop for like $200 from Best Buy:

Or find a friend. There are likely people at your field who can help you. Hell, your mechanic probably has a windows 10 machine to run their IA AD tracking software on it.

Re: Garmin database manager

jcadwell...
Yes, I'm in Benton City.
I got lucky and found Inter Avionics located next to Bergstrom in Pasco. Their tech wizard Bryan knew EXACTLY what was going on. I pulled both cards and went to see him. We got everything loaded except terrain. The card is to small (megs). Apparently Garmin has or had a motherboard/card upgrade option for the 420 that was never installed. Version 7? The upgrade was for IFR if I understood Bryan correctly & this unit is not waas enabled.

I have no plans for flying IFR. Bryan said he had Garmin DB Mgr running on Win 7 at one time. I can load the DB updates using my machine and the Garmin card reader he loaned me, but the Mgr program refuses to run, on top of which I'm unable to delete/uninstall the program. Only solution I can see is a registry hack.

Now I need to put the cards back in and see if they're working & I'll do that later today. I use iFly GPS on my phone & tablet and have their unit. It was fine in the other plane with a yoke but finding a spot in the Tecnam is tight with a stick. One thing I'm sure of...time to study up & learn the 420.

Brad, I looked at the 440 per your suggestion. If I can't get the 420 under control...it's a viable option. Being the cheapskate I am, I'm going to put some effort into learning what I have.

My thanks to all... Happy Flying! & stay safe.

Re: Garmin database manager

I’d highly recommend the 430 outside of going full glass, especially if it’s just VFR, I mean you don’t need to really update it outside of every few years

In a 7700 event, you don’t even have to look at it, twist direct enter enter, I could do that on my 430/530 without even looking at it

Flew brand new a full glass plane and a the same airframe with dual 530s, very well versed in both, but for getting to the nearest field, as well as a few other things, I was significantly faster with the 530s

My plane has a 430/530, zero desire to change it unless I did a full dynon glass panel, but in my 185 I think it just wouldn’t look right

Re: Garmin database manager

Appreciate the advice. The unit stays in & I'll learn to use it. I managed to find some expert help on using the unit. Pretty sure I'm going to like it after testing it in front of the hanger.

There is a good 430 simulator too if you want to learn the menu logic and all
