GDL 39 as GPS source for GDL 82?

In an attempt to avoid having multiple GPS antennas, has anyone attempted using a GDL 39 as the GPS source for a GDL 82 via the data port of the 39?

(Yes, I am aware the GDL 82 can be had with an integrated GPS chip. I am simply attempting to avoid an external GPS antenna for both my 39 and the 82...)

Thanks in advance.

Ummmm, I dont think that is allowed. I think the GPS source has to come from a certified panel mount not a portable, however, I could be wrong.

Pretend I said GDL 39R then, although point taken.

Skybeacon is not panel mount, but it is indeed mounted and not a portable thus possibly allowing for its usage as the GPS source (and transmitter)?

Not allowed. Certified gps source (as G44 meant) such as 430,650,440,etc....or the 82 that has its own certified gps internal....or the GPS 20A. Sorry, no easy ways around this one. I haven’t installed any 82’s yet, but if I remember corrrectly they don’t allow you to use the internal gps to output a signal to another device.

The sky beacon is certified using the internal components as a package. For all I know it is a cheap off the shelf unit that meets specs and the company was able to foot the bill to show that it meets specs in that application.

What about using a small puck antenna for the 39 on the glare shield? It doesn’t need to be fed from a full up GA35 antenna.

Re: GDL 39 as GPS source for GDL 82?

FWIW I installed a G5 in my airplane a few years ago,
just like Garmin said, the internal GPS antenna didn't work so well with the unit buried in the panel.
The paperwork recommended a certain Garmin GPS antenna, don't recall which one but it was a kinda spendy external-mount model.
But it also said that any antenna could be used if it met certain specs.
A Garmin GA25 BNC antenna meets those specs-- $20 from gpscity.com.
And it just lays up on the top of the glareshield.

Thanks all.

I already run the small $20 MCX external GPS antenna hooked up to my GDL39 up in my skylight (as well as an external ADSB ant on the belly). I was really hoping to not have to run the bigger external GPS antenna for the GDL82 as well, but looks like I won't have much of a choice if I go the GDL82 route.

TailBeacon is looking better by the minute.
