GDL 50 with Garmin 796 Config Advice Needed
Avionics, airplane covers, tires, handheld radios, GPS receivers, wireless Wx uplink...any product related to backcountry aircraft and flying.
i have purchased a GDL 50 for my Garmin 796. I've studied the manuals for the 796 a few times and still cannot get traffic or wx via my GDL 50. If there is someone on this site with knowledge in this area, I'd really appreciate a conversation with you! Thanks in advance. Terri

Are you wiring them together or doing it via bluetooth?

If you look at the GDL series capabilities and features, oddly, Bluetooth provides more features. So on the 796 go to tool, setup and down to bluetooth look for the GDL and let them pair. Once paired, set it for automatic re-connect. They should talk together and have a drink all on their own after that.

I’ve already paired them via blue tooth.

I suspect you may need to do a software update on your 796. If you have not done so, it will not see the data, since the GDL features for FIS and ADS-B traffic was added about two updates ago. So if you have not done so, plug a USB cable into the 796 and your computer. Ensure your 796 is fully charged or on power from a cradle. Once it is plugged into a computer you will see the icon appear on the 796 indicating it is dumb, listen to the computer mode. Open Garmin web Updater on your computer. It may take one or two tries until the Webupdater sees your 796. Once it does it lets you know what version is installed on your 796 and what is available to update it. If it says there are updates, click let it do so. It takes a while so go have a glass of wine while it does it thing. The 796 will need to restart to install the software and then all should be well between the 796 and the GDL-50.
If you have not downloaded Webupdater, look for it on the web, it is a free utility from Garmin and works for both Mac and PC.

I did an update of my 796 using the Web Updater. It worked! I now see traffic from my GDL50 on my 796. Magic!

Thank you so much for the suggestion. TT
