I've had the same thought, it'd be pretty cool to have geologist as a back seater, explaining what we were looking at and how it got there. Especially parts of Wyoming.

“Rocks and Wings” by CL “Pete” Sainsbury is pretty good. He flew Super Cubs and Choppers in AK as a geologist. Great read! My friend Ted still has one of his old Cubs. (Ex It L-21)

Nick Zentner's geology videos on YouTube are great. If you live or have traveled through Washington State and are interested in geology you will likely find his videos interesting.

Here is an interesting book about the early days flying geologists and others around in British Columbia in helicopters in the early days.

Re: Geologist in a helicopter

Years ago I met two gents from Australia who were visiting Fairbanks. They saw an R-22 go past, and started talking about Robinson helicopters, or “Robbies” as they called them.

I asked them if they were helicopter operators, and their answer was sort of. I asked them to explain. Turns out they are exploration geologists who own an exploration outfit. They hire young geologists, get them trained to fly an R-22, and send them out to explore. Apparently they also own a couple of Hueys, which move fuel and supplies for the geologists.

Interesting guys. I asked them how many helicopters they operated, and I’ve forgotten the number, but it was over 20.....

Business must be good, but they made the point that the aerial perspective and ability to land where ever really improved the effectiveness of the geologists.

Re: Geologist in a helicopter

When you have two or more geologists in the same room...what do you have? Answer: what sounds like a fight, but in reality is very loud argument over naming a newly discovered rock. The last time we used a helicopter during a field exploration program....it was cheaper than drill crew/s stand by time because we were shut down due to a flower...Walpole poppy! Frigg’n State botanist sent us a fax with a B&W image and metric dimensions...tried sending out geochem samplers to find these endangered flowers...with little metric rulers...Nada! Turns out we had an abundance of these very healthy, larger than described Walpole poppies. Damn botanists just didn’t know where to look...just above the boarder zone....a helicopter ride around the region....every location on every hill side was loaded with the flowers...wonder if they’re still on the endangered species list?

Re: Geologist in a helicopter

I enjoyed the video, and I fly the route frequently.

I must admit that when I read the thread title I thought it was the start of a joke that would involve Bre-X somehow.

Here's A flight up Moses Coulee. She put a camera out on the nose of the helicopter and turned the Camera inside to look back at their faces. So, when they point at something on their left or right you have to look the opposite direction so see it.
