Gillette-near Scio, OR, Fly-IN 9/23/2012

See bottom post for updated date/time. -Z (if the chicken lasts that long), the Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes, in Scio, OR, (20 miles NE of Lebanon, OR, S30) is having a chicken dinner for $10 a head for a fundraiser for their school. Gillette is 2900' long, elevation 735', grass with power lines on the E end. Normally land over the power lines to the W. Departure is wide open, no obstructions. There is also a car show, normally, 100+ cars, 5-10 planes, strip is across from the church. In the past pilots get a free lunch ticket! =P~

Last year, we had some wet stuff come down, not rain, but almost!

Hope to see more planes this year!

Re: Gillette-near Scio, OR, Fly-IN 9/23/2012

The 78th Annual Jordan Chicken Dinner, Cruise-In and Fly-In is set for 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at 39043 Jordan Road, Scio.

When the weather is good, as many as 2,000 people have swarmed the tiny, unincorporated village of Jordan for the annual tradition, said Our Lady of the Lourdes Catholic Mission office administrator Jeanne Sanders-Howe. About 300 to 400 classic cars show up for the cruise-in. And in the past, pilots have offered airplane rides and about 10-15 planes fly in.

“It’s a great family day out with a lot of good food, good cars to look at, vendors, handmade items, a country store with handmade food. It’s a trip back into the past,” Sanders-Howe said. “We’re a very small community out here but we become quite large that day.”

8-26 I'm guessing 122.9

I went! What a great event. Lots of great food. Check out the cinnamon rolls, but get there early, they were down to the last about 11A. Tons of neat cars. Oldies playing on the PA. Gillette field is long and smooth. The aviation parking is on an orchard grass field and not very smooth, but it's fine if you taxi slowly.

I wish I'd gone their years ago.

IMHO someone ruined a cool old rig with that dual-engine business. Is that a Willys pickup? Maybe Willys engines then.
I really like seeing old rigs that still have the old flatheads in them. For so many years it was mandatory to pull out the flathead engine & drop in a 327 or something, so nowadays the old flatties are an unusal site. Talking to car guys, though, I guess you can buy just about any parts you need either used or new/reproduced, so now they're getting popular again- esp with the rat rod guys.
