Giving Tuesday

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday.... I think the holiday season is upon us. Over the last week I have not engaged in much shopping (did buy my fair share of 100LL though), but I do like the idea of giving.

Has anyone made a donation today? If so, to which organization or foundation? Plenty of folks affected by natural disaster recently. Wounded Warrior Project perhaps?

I don't have a lot to give, but giving sure feels good. Where is the best place to put it?

Re: Giving Tuesday

Red Cross is always taking blood. I have the universal blood, so I donate a few times a year.

ACLU and Habitat for Humanity are our long term annual targets. We then rotate another one or two each year. Haven't decided which of those will be on the list this year.

On a far more self serving note, I think we kicked a small donation to BCP this year. But that's more like a subscription than a donation.

Re: Giving Tuesday

Thanks for the reminder MM.

I have a cousin who went a looong way up the Army chain. I asked him about the best vet - help organization. He said Fisher House without hesitation.

I am a big fan of Habitat for Humanity. I would readily second that one.

Not fond of ACLU though. They have taken stances supporting gun control, supporting abortion and advocating the banning of all religious symbols on public places (i.e. crosses and bible verses, etc). Hard for me to get by that.

Love the idea of Giving Tuesday and thanks for the reminder here!!

Gun control: Check. Intelligent people can disagree on what the founders intended there.

Abortion: Check. Religious issue. Someone who believes that a fully right-endowed life begins at conception is never going to see eye to eye with people who don't believe that.

Crosses: This one is a small surprise. The ACLU generally fights for equal access (e.g. see the Festivus pole currently in the state capital of Wisconsin). Here's an example of them fighting to *keep* religious symbols that a local government is demanding removal of (https://www.aclu.org/religion-belief/ac ... s-cemetery). There is a rumor that's been around for a long time about them suing to remove some symbols. It's not true (http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/cemetery.asp). But, yeah, they have fought to not have the ten commandments in courts, for example, since we don't live in a theocracy and the constitution specifically prohibits such nods towards specific deities.

Re: Giving Tuesday

I chose the Salvation Army today. They've been at it a long time, and have helped an awful lot of people.

Salary of CEO of Salvation Army is $12,500. They get a lot of bang for your buck.

Re: Giving Tuesday

I made it fun and picked two that I have never donated to before. I ended up going with the Fisher House Foundation and Mission Aviation Fellowship. Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Giving Tuesday

What the hell, Matt? Getting everyone all riled up by starting a thread about where we like to make our charitable donations?!?!

You should be ashamed of yourself for being such an agitator! ](*,)

Re: Giving Tuesday

Salvation Army. They helped by selling me an aloha shirt for $2.00 to go on a job interview many years ago. I never will forget that. I had sailed from California to Hawaii with only a few t-shirts and foul weather gear and needed a job fast.

Writing a check right now to an orphanage in Nepal. My buddy has been leading treks in the area for years and has taken a personal interest. Anytime a friend invests his time and effort into a cause, I like to help out.
