Good AV gas

How come you guys in the pacific northwest seem to be getting all the good av gas? Last week I was in Lewiston and found that they were one of the least proud of the gas they sell $4.45gal.

The gas that is sold in Carson City ($3.98)must be a reject batch or from China because the price is a lot less that what I paid in WA.

I really feel for you up there in the Northwest. Don't take this wrong but your prices suck! I just hope we don't try to play catch up down here.

Yeah, I was REALLY bummed last weekend, arriving at Two Harbors MN, topped off the mains to be on the safe side heading home, though I had plenty of gas. Looked at the gas receipt (self serve) and at $3.50 a gallon, decided I'd fill the tip tanks as well.

Well, we're not REALLY in the Pac NW, although some folks in USGS think we are, but gas IS just $3.90 in Jerome, ID (KJER) Tanker up next time!

I wishI could find some of that kind of fuel prices. I paid $4.60 at Baker City Or. and $4.32 at ONO Ontario, Or. It sure takes the fun out of my passion.

Strange how one airport is selling fuel in the mid to high $3.00 range and the rest of the airports around are near the $5.00 mark.

Getting to the point that some of the fun is taken out with the increasing cost of fuel then you look at the price of a tin can ticket and everything is put back in perspective.

100LL is about $4.70 at Port Townsend WA, pretty close to avergae for this area.
What's car gas selling for in everyone's area? I just paid $2.88 for alcohol-free 87 octane regular (Chevron). Is cargas prices lower where the cheap avgas is?

18NV,

Basically, it depends largely when they got their last load of bulk fuel. The price I paid in Two Harbors was 25 cents a gallon less than our airport just paid for a 9,000 gallon load.

At the Buhl airport we are getting mogas at the filling station price plus 15 cents per gal. Last time I filled up it was in the 2.90 range.

Where does one find clean MoGas anyway? I thought washington state now mandates alcohol be added to all automotive fuel, to promote the biofuels industry. Perhaps mogas is not equal to cargas?

There is a new FBO operator gong in there and I do not know if they will be with CC at point of purchase or not. I hope he does, however the folks that have the concession will allow you to have a key and an bill system, that is how I do it there.

I think maybe all the cargas on the big (east) side of Puget Sound has alcohol. Here on the Olympic Peninsula we still have pure (??) cargas available. Wasn't there some recent legislation to prevent ALL automotive gasoline being blended with alcohol?

I think there was an attempt to keep it out of premium gas, but I'm not sure why. I still have to think there are hundreds of people using alcohol blended fuel in their aircraft daily, and I haven't heard of an accident attributed to it. Makes you wonder if it's like cell phone use in an aircraft.

Alcohol was not banned, it is MTBE (another oxygenate) that was banned in NY and CA, and will probably be banned nation wide soon. MTBE was linked to cancer and ground water contamination. Alcohol is mixed with gasoline (gasohol) in high population areas as a way to lower vehicle emissions. It also raise the octane of gasoline. We all know what it can do to an aircraft engine though. I looked on the State web site for Utah and found the regulations surrounding gasohol in our state, and how it must be labeled at the pump. You might try this in your state and see where you can find clean mo-gas outside of the city. A friend of mine crosses the county line ( 2 miles from his field), just outside of the city, and fills his truck bed tank with off road (lower taxes) gasoline. I hope this helps.

Another note on mo-gas, I figured a motor(s) overhaul at 24k and saving 2$ per gal. Every 667 hours I fly on mo-gas I pay for new motors.

I was reading about a method for determining if fuel contains alcohol.

Add some fuel to a clear container (beaker, pee bottle sans pee, etc.).
Mark the level of the fuel.
Shake the container (without spilling fuel out!)
If the level of the fuel is now higher than the mark, it contains alcohol.

I haven't tried this yet.
