Tick,
There are some general rules,
Title Search
Pre-Buy Inspection
Actually looking at the airplane (own two eyes)
Other than that, the Aircraft Type club of the Type airplane you are looking at would be good specific information.

I have a book titled the Aviation Consumer Used Aircraft Guide. It was published in 1981 and I'm not sure if there is a more current edition. It's a great book, but has a strong bias in favor of tricycle gear. If you can get over that, it contains a wealth of information.
AOPA has a lot of stuff to read also. The price evaluator is a condensed version of the book that can be had, like "the Blue Book" for airplanes. I think they can save you money on paperwork like the title search too. If not a member, I think you ought to be. They are a pretty loud voice for us.
I'm an AOPA member so I'll have to check that out. There was a very outdated copy of a book about airplane ownership sitting at the FBO the other day and it got me thinking. I'll stick to the free stuff on AOPA for now.
I've noticed that a lot of resources out there are, understandably, tailored towards guys who want to either build time or just fly from FBO to FBO. Hard to find stuff that addresses what to look for in an airplane you intend to use off-field in Alaska. This site has been a good resource for that kind of stuff fortunately.
I can recommend "Airplane Ownership" by Ronald J. Wanttaja. It covers selecting, inspecting, financing, insuring, hangaring, and maintaining airplanes. I have referred to it constantly over the years. It includes both case histories of older and modern aircraft. A good read.
It is in print and published by TAB Books a division of McGraw-Hill, Inc.
