GoPro HD: Pilatus PC-6 Porter bush flying, Timika, Papua

Following on from my previous movie about flying in Borneo, I bring you all my latest movie from the mountains of Papua, Indonesia. This movie shows a few of the airstrips we go to from the town of Timika delivering supplies and helping fly the local people in/out of the really remote villages.

I'm collecting more footage almost daily so hope to have another movie for you all in the next few months :)

Lots more info about bush flying in Papua on my blog (link in my signature).

I was driving up the Cape York Peninsula last week ( just below Papua ). Got eaten alive by bugs, scars from the bites! Do you use a lot of Deet?

Your flying abilities are stellar! You make good videos too!

Fantastic, thanks for taking the time to document and post the clip. Flew into Tufi in New Guniea for some diving last year , truly is wild country. Yep jealous as well.

Matt, Great video and what is the story on that house that is on the mountain peak with the strip that looks like it has a wall at the end. I think the first strip shown.

IndoPilot, how often are you flying while you work there? (just curious how many flying hours you log weekly)

That looks like some great flying. I have only a few hours in the Porter and I loved every minute of it.

Thanks for the kind words all

To answer your queries:

Mosquitoes (and Malaria/Dengue) are an issue and I will use Deet if going out for the evening where I know I'll be outside. Depending on where you are seems to affect how bad they are. Timika is actually ok and I rarely get bitten thankfully. Due to the work we do (pilots) and duration of time out here, all the anti-malaria pills are a no-no. It's a risk we take and I know lots of fellow pilots who've had one or other (or both!). Worst I've had so far is a couple of doses of Typhoid and that's despite having the vaccine!

The "Magic Tree" is a token effort against the local's unique aroma. It's impossible to put into words how pungent the smell is at times; a romantic aviation job this ain't!

The house on the hill is actually the airstrip's "Terminal building" at Tsinga. The airstrip was build on that ridge at 6500ft by the Freeport mining company for the local people. What they didn't consider is the fact the villages it serves are in the valley floor below which is a 2 hour hike...

As for flying hours. I can log up to 30 hours on a good week or zero on a bad one if the aircraft's gone tech. The aircraft take a real pounding on the airstrips here and getting parts shipped is a constant battle with customs. They just don't understand AOG and hold the parts for days/weeks sometimes.

The angle of descent on that bird is amazing. It would really call for a set of landing gear to match if not completely rotated out of its sink by touchdown. I could really watch it work in the roll out. Some of those strips are not so smooth. Does your camera pivot in flight or is there more than one? Great job and maybe you could hand out little tree deodorizer necklaces for each of your passengers as gifts as they get in. :(

Great to see all that green after all those ski flying pics by others!

The Porter has a stick, even better. What a great front office.
