Grass strips in SoCal?
Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.
Does anyone know of any grass strips in the SoCal area? I just got my taildragger endorsement a week or two ago, and would love to go practice on that well-loved surface.
The only one I'm aware of is Flabob, although I've never been there.
Thanks!
Kris

Flabob does indeed. The area between the runway and the ramp. You can just barely make out the tires that mark the threshold on the 11/12/13 imagery on Google Earth at the runway 24 end. Can be a good bump when crossing the taxiways; and more than a few clumps of grass were stout enough to bounce the L-4 I was flying back into the air...or well that may have just been the pilot....

Word on the ramp last time I was there was that it will be getting replanted "soon" to improve the ride.
I have seen people land on the grass north of the runway at Corona as well.

Santa Paula has some really nice unofficial grass.

Corona frowns on it but we do it at times, if you do it N of 25 land mid way near or beyond wind sock as prior has so large holes and ruts, mid on is smooth. I use grass at Flabob all the time a little rough Innitial 24Right smooth mid field and as previously mentioned they are going to reseed and pull out first turn off for longer smoother area.

ocotillo in the desert is dirt... a little east on the road from there is the Blue Inn... pretty rough but a fairly good breakfast... they thought they would be making an improvement over dirt at the blue in by "paving the dirt but they just put old black top down on the dirt and flattened it out hoping the sun would do the rest... anyway most of the "strips" I go to are a shot in the dark as to whether you;ll get stopped by border patrol and Ice... You WILL be watched wherever you fly in the San Diego area , especially if you land close to the border...my favorite is Smugglers cove, a short old forestry strip just west of Morena lake in the canyon.... watch for border patrol vehicles on the ridge to the south ad land between the two oak trees at the east end of the strip....there are a couple of dry lake beds in the desert south of Borego but again watch for law enforcement... they allow all kinds of 4 wheel and 2 wheeled traffic on the dry lake beds but go nuts when a plane lands... they will come towards you code 3... mostly a good idea to take off if you see them in the distance screaming your way....lol....good luck...

We're having a drought here remember

not too much grass around plenty of dirt though. I base at Flabob and I always land on the second section of grass I was told that that first section is really rough. Second section is kinda rough too, it's about 1,000' long.

Thanks gang. I'll give flabob a try as suggested. I've landed a 172 at ocotillo wells, so might give that a shot in the tailwheel when it cools down in the fall.

Don't forget to check out Shortfield.com
Some other dirt strips would be Bacon Strip Ranch and Amboy.
There was a strip up by Arrowhead, but not sure the status.
One more strip that just came to my mind is a strip that used to be by Hemet Lake. Does anybody remember that one? Still there? I've seen it flying over on an airline flight a while ago.
