Grass strips near KCOE

In response to MTVs thread: https://backcountrypilot.org/community/ ... tive-25115

Any suggestions on a uncontrolled public grass strip with 100miles of KCOE? I don’t think Magee, Cavanaugh, etc are appropriate places for me to practice short field, and I’ve beat the piss out of the pavement at KCOE. Need to be able to throw some cones out along side the runway without irritating anyone.

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

It's not real close, but Ekhart International (1S1) near Porthill used to be a nice unpaved strip. My tailwheel instructor and I used this one to practice off the pavement work. Avgas at Boundary County(65S) is usually the cheapest around. When landing to the south at Ekhart, you are actually in Canadian airspace on downwind , so don't go any further north!

Deer Park (KDEW) has a 1500' grass strip just south of 05/23. It doesn't show up in the airport info, but it's clearly marked. Lots of flight training at Deer Park, so nobody would be too bothered. Ask around about the grass?

67S Priest Lake USFS could work. It's still somewhat close to Hill's Resort.

If you are willing to fly onto gravel, consider Little Goose (16W). Middle of nowhere, cool location in the bottom of the Snake River Canyon, and a small park if you want to spend the night. Lower Monumental (W09) is similar, but up on a bluff without the camping.

Kamiah (S73) used to be nice. I hope to go to their Fly In this summer.

Tekoa (Willard) has a grass along the south side of the pavement and is in decent shape, you could definitely throw some cones out and nobody would care.

Hackney is just north of CDA and I use it frequently, nice little spot.

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

I'd second the grass at KDEW, only caveat is if there are a few folks in the pattern for 16-34 sequencing gets a bit interesting and it'd likely be on you since 16-34 is preferred.
Also a second for 67S, not too much around and the runway is used for snowmobile racing in the winter so a bit of airplane noise is likely no big deal.
Not charted either, but if you're not on 4" or smaller tires the grass west of the runway at Mead(70S) is fair game. My only request is you wave as you pass my place. I've been meaning to put some cones out here for practice as well.

Any suggestions on getting permission to use Hackney?

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

You're good to go to land in there as well as Treeport. I've talked with several people there about permission and none of them mind. My mechanic is on Hackney so I'll stop in and visit with him when I go up there (he's on the south end of the runway with the paved apron).

Regarding Treeport: the HOA is now requiring a written waiver to use the runway

Idaho has a recreational use statute that protects land owners if they don't charge for access...

https://legislature.idaho.gov/statutesr ... CT36-1604/

Maybe someone could let Treeport know.

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

I double checked with the Treeport people last night. To land at Treeport you need:

1. To know at least one of the residents
2. Have an invitation
3. Have signed a pilot liability waiver form.

This may change in the future, but this is the current policy. I've been flying in there for years, but had to fill out the waiver to continue.

Bummer! I have been landing there for awhile too, must be a new thing.. I do know one of the property owners so I'll hit him up.

Kinda of odd, they have a fly-in every year too. So does everyone coming to fly-in have to sign the waiver before landing?

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

I am not aware or optimistic that there will be ANY more fly-ins there. I'm bummed, as well. If any of you attended in the past 5 years or so, I was part of the team that helped park the planes. I'm REALLY going to miss it! Hope something changes, too......I will post if somebody tells me if things change for the better. Sorry for the thread dift

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

Okay, I stand corrected: There ARE plans for a Treeport Fly-In in Mid-Late August. I was told that visiting aircraft will be able to land without previously having the HOA waivers on file, but would need to complete them before departing. Hope this turns out well, and I will post on BCP if things look positive.

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

That is not correct. You must have permission from a resident at Treeport and you have to fill out an "acknowledgement"/waiver form. This form has always been in existence but not enforced until now. If folks do not want to fill out the form they will be ask not to come back.

Treeport is a private runway for use of it's residents and their guest. The owner's that make up the Treeport Homeowner's Assoc. paid a lot of money for the privilege of living here. We are not trying to be turds but there has been folks using our runway for back country training and until a stop was put to it, one school made as many as 10 takeoff and landings a day.

We pay a lot of money for runway maintenance and liability insurance, which all comes out of the association member's pockets. There was a tragic accident last year buy a pilot that did not have permission to use the runway and we feel things need to tightened up.

Most of the residents at Treeport retired and built homes here so we could fly the back country of Idaho. We have already been sued once by a non-aviator and even when you are right, civil suits cost money. Yes, we know about Idaho's protection clause for back country recreational airstrips. There are still questions as to weather it covers private airstrips. The fact is, even if we were covered, it wouldn't keep us from getting sued. Attorney's cost money and can break the bank very quickly.

If you want to fly into Treeport , just get permission first and ask your host for a waiver form. That form is good indefinitely as long as the tail number and pilot in command stays the same. If the form is not on file, the pilot of the aircraft in question can be trespassed. This not something we want to do, but we have to protect to folks that pay to live here.

If you have any questions feel free to call me. I'm president of the HOA and can be reached at 208-623-6202.

Re: Grass strips near KCOE

A phone call is all it takes most of the time. We do have to be a bit guarded. Even though our airstrip is 3000 feet long, we are surrounded by tall trees and low time, flat land pilots seem to get a little nervous on final. Pilot skill and aircraft performance can also be a factor. We are at 2500ft MSL and it can get pretty hot here in the summer. Guest of Treeport do need to get permission, but waiver/acknowledgement forms can be done after arrival. Each homeowner will have copies for guest to sign.
The Treeport sponsored fly-in will not happen this year for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that my wife and I don't have time to put it together and no one else wants to ram-rod the thing. We got very little help from residents last year. The EAA guys helped out a bunch and deserve another thanks for that. The residents that dropped the ball last year are the same folks complaining this year about not having one.
The EAA chapter based on the field may have a pancake breakfast but that is unknown right now. Hope everyone has a safe flying summer and if you want to come into Treeport, give me a call. I'll have a cold drink for you and a document to sign.
