Gravel/sand bar landings

[Split from WA Pilots]

Kurt, you were talkiing about gravel-bar landings a while back. I flew from darrington to Concrete sunday (after I talked to you on the radio at jefferson) along the Sauk River. Even with the water kinda high with the recent rains & snowmelt, the Sauk has some awesome looking bars. Wasn't low enough to scope things out real well, though, so I'm not too sure what size the rocks are. I'm kinda chicken to do that gravel bar stuff with my little 800 tires.
Carey, you're a famous gravel-bar operator ( written up in Flying magazine a while back), you ever landed up there on the Sauk or Skagit Rivers? ( I liked the advice in the magazine article: "always be the second one to land" )

I have been watching the rivers out on the coast pretty close trying to size them up. The Hoh seems like the most probable. And no, just watching, walking and learning. Carey, are you familar with this area? I'll look for you Saturday. I'm I'll have some questions for you. Advice is cheaper than the landing gear.

Kurt, I saw that you were out roaring around this evening chasing your buddy with the 195. You flew right over my house at about 730pm. I'm about a mile south of the head of Discovery Bay, & about a mile & a quarter south of Olympic Airfield. You guys looked & sounded great! Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to rat you out to the FAA for flying too low. Sorry.........

I never fly less than 500' AGL or 50' over water. Never, never, never. And I'm sticking to it.
It's tough keeping up with that big round motor but we did it. Woody let my daughter Kate fly it for awhile last night. She did great! I wish that I got to cut my teeth at 13 on a radial!

Is there any consistency in the gravel. For example is the gravel hard packed or loose and shale like. I would imagine that different rock/gravel "feels" different. What tires are you using? I am on 8:50's and they seem to do everything I need of them. Would like Bushwheels but can't justify the $ as yet.
