Great weather today! R44 trip.

Today was a fabulous day on the Coast. Sunny and warm. Interesting for the middle of February. Cruised over the forest and landed at Wakonda Beach State Airfield. A neighbor walked over and gave us a hug. Very friendly these airport communities.

Re: Wakonda Beach great weather today! R44 trip.

Below is another view of a flight to Wakonda. My first overnight backcountry flight was to Wakonda in the Scout on conventional landing gear. There have been many crashes there. A guy from Newport hit the wires and put his friend in the hospital, lucky they both lived. A hangar mate of mine hit a patch of mud in a C172 and totaled it, needed a trailer to get home.

Be careful on grass in wet environments. The continental isobars for yearly total precipitation converge exactly on the area!

Enjoy the video and carry on safely men!

Note: long video you might want a cup of coffee to stay awake

There are so many millions of places to land a chopper on the Coastal Mountains. The forests are working forests, which have hundreds of miles of backcountry roads.

Today we stopped on a deserted road to stretch our legs, not too easy at my age.

A beautiful high pressure system is sitting over the coast. Mary is heading back to Honolulu, I see the flight’s contrails and a target on ADSB directly over our airport. Amazing.

Ambient air temperature outside was 35F and in the hangar it was 42F. Decided to use my super highly technical preheat system. Please, DO NOT use any of my technical information. It’s for skilled pilots and craftsman only. I’m working on copyrights & patents also

After the preheat I flew....video will be released as soon as I’m motivated.

Re: Great weather today! R44 trip.

Very unusual day today. The dew point spread was 20 degrees at the airport. Decided to hover using zero carburetor heat. The ship was about 70% GTW and only needed 19” inches of MAP to hover. 19” inches is pretty good to lift appropriately 2K LBS of aircraft off the ground in a steady hover, no wind.

Note: adding full carburetor heat adds about 1.5” or so of manifold pressure without adding HP and will enrich the mixture a bit.

Dry and sunny today, February in Oregon. Enjoy enjoy enjoy! Check this picture below looking West this morning at 07:00 PST @ sea level: Image

Safety Notice SN-25
Issued: Dec 1986 Rev: Jul 2012 CARBURETOR ICE
Avoidable accidents have been attributed to engine stoppage due to carburetor ice. When used properly, the carburetor heat and carb heat assist systems on the R22 and R44 will prevent carburetor ice.
Pressure drops and fuel evaporation inside the carburetor cause significant cooling. Therefore, carburetor ice can occur at OATs as high as 30°C (86°F). Even in generally dry air, local conditions such as a nearby body of water can be conducive to carburetor ice. When in doubt, assume conditions are conducive to carburetor ice and apply carb heat as required.
For the R22 and R44, carburetor heat may be necessary during takeoff. Unlike airplanes which take off at full throttle, helicopters take off using power as required, making them vulnerable to carburetor ice. Also use full carb heat during run-up to preheat the induction system.
On aircraft equipped with the carb heat assist system, the control knob should be left unlatched unless it is obvious that conditions are not conducive to carburetor ice.
Carburetor heat reduces engine power output for a given manifold pressure. Approximately 1.5 in. Hg additional MAP is required to generate maximum continuous power (MCP) or takeoff power (TOP) with full heat applied. The additional MAP with carb heat does not overstress the engine or helicopter because power limits are still being observed. Since the engine is derated, it will produce TOP at lower altitudes even with full heat. However, avoid using more heat than required at high altitudes as the engine may reach full throttle at less than MCP or TOP.

KONP @ 06:00 PST , CAVU, Wind calm, dew point spread 26F ! It’s a warm dry day at Cape Foul Weather in February. Rolled out the ship and flew over some off the most beautiful coastline on earth.
