Grizzly attack

As we have discussed before, Grizzly bears rarely attack if you keep your distance.

This poor fellow was 80 yards away when mama charged. Looks like bear spray didn't work real well.

With the re introduction of predators that can kill us we have to be vigilant.

I remember that story from a few years ago. Really experienced guy, had a hand cannon of some sort with him too, but maybe had more faith in the pepper spray then than he has now. Follow-up video at

Seems to me he's still sold on pepper spray...it was the only weapon he ever had time to deploy in either attack, and he still feels it had a positive effect in the first attack.

Likable guy...loves the woods and knows bears just want to be left alone to be bears. Momma grizzly with cubs is about as nervous-crazy as an animal can get, and he met her too close. Not his fault, not her fault, just what happened.

Love the interviewer asking him if he was aware of the carcass dump next to the trailhead...he had no idea. I recon if he knew about it, he'd have hunted somewhere else. But of course you can't criticize a rancher for dumping carcasses near a popular trailhead in grizzly country...

Re: Grizzly attack

That attack took place on the Gravelly Range I believe, on the south end of it. The reason that stuck in my mind is I had been wanting to ride my e bike on some trails there, after eyeballing things from the air earlier. I did it this summer, but the signs on the trail head were pretty attention getting: DANGER..etc. I always ride with a bear bell, most attacks SEEM to take place when everyone gets surprised, mostly hunters who are trying real hard not to make any noise. I make a lot of noise, besides the bear bell. No gun, or bear spray, but a marine air horn was carried in such a way that I could hit it instantly.

I rode 6 miles in, but since I had already seen this video when it first came out, I couldn't get it out of my head....and every curve in the trail was, interesting. One fear was not seeing a bear ahead of me, but behind me, where I'd have to pass the area again to get back to my car. No sightings at all, of course, and I can now scratch that area off my bucket list. The last several years I have flown the Gravelly Range low level, meaning 8500' to 9500', and I wanted to drive the road, and did, the bike ride was part of it.

Meanwhile, a neighbor a bit more of 1/4 mile away, who lives near the same stream/woods that run through my place, captured a big ass mountain lion on his game camera, literally in my backyard

Sorry, couldn't help myself, I'll kick myself off the forum now.

Re: Grizzly attack

Lots of grizz troubles this year. Doesn't help that they ended the Grizzly hunt in BC this year.

This guy had a narrow escape. Poor choices were made... buckshot was one of them and posting the video online was the other.

My perspective is that if they are repeatedly aggressive in my yard they have mistaken their habitat for mine and that will likely involve terminal consequences.
