Grote LED landing light

I know this topic is much discussed, but if anyone is considering using the much talked about Grote 63821-5 LED landing light (a non-STC'd 4509 replacement), Sherco Auto & Marine Supply http://www.sherco-auto.com has them at $65 with free shipping.

For those not familiar with the many online discussions, the summary is this: not as bright or penetrating as STC'd solutions such as Whelen or AeroLEDs, but would be extremely usable as a taxi or always-on recognition light.

Re: Grote LED landing light

Haven't bought it yet, but am considering this LED 660-R from Larsen Lights. It's a 60 degree "flood" pattern, but delivers over 4200 effective lumens (rated at 5000 lumens vs. 1100 for the Grote). They are on sale right now for $59 (regular price is $72).

Wow, 5000 lumens-- that's super bright!
The LED recognition light I installed (13W x 30 degree spread) is only 900 lumens.
I checked out your link, looks like that light is configured for a stand-alone bracket mount--
doesn't look like it could replace a 4509 in a standard landing light bay, which is where most people would want to mount them.
Do they have a comparable 4509-replacement lamp?

Also, FWIW I know a guy who wired one of these $30 flasher units into his landing light circuit for a recognition light, works great:

Re: Grote LED landing light

Here is one that might work as well. Been looking myself for the best bang for the buck. I will be installing a set of wing tips with recog lights on the Wagon soon. I have a "wig wag" unit I'm going to re-purpose. It's hooked up to the lights on the cowl and really isn't very noticeable. Any other pireps for a PAR36 syle?

Re: Grote LED landing light

Looking at your link, it appears the Larsen light is a 5-1/2" unit.
Not sure how well that might fit your mounting set-up.
Mine is a 4-1/2" drop-in replacement for a 4509 sealed beam, and it fits neatly into the landing light bracket on my Cessna. Here's a link to the one I installed.
SB-PAR-13: 13W (100W equivalent), 30 degree spread, 900 lumens, $65.

As far as wig-wag, I've read (and seen) that they aren't all that effective when the wig-wagging lights are right next to each other, whether in the wing or in the nosebowl. That's why you usually see them on opposing wings.

Re: Grote LED landing light

There's another one right under the one in his link that is 4.5" and is still 1450 lumens. Might be a good option. In the "people also bought".

Re: Grote LED landing light

I have been watching these ones for a while:

My plane already has a Wheelen landing light but the taxi light needs to be upgraded some time.

Re: Grote LED landing light

The Grote works perfect as a drop in replacement. I used it in the taxi light and it has good light dispersal for taxi and in flight recognition. It failed quickly and unfortunately I had purchased from a private individual on eBay didn't have an easy route for return. You quoted a good price. As was said, the best value is in convincing yourself to leave lights on for safety.
