Has anyone tried Avmaps EKP-4 handheld gps? I was wondering if it does as much as Garmins new 696 or 695. Thanks ahead, Bill.

I've used one before. Great graphics and display is very viewable in bright sunlight. I just had trouble getting used to the user interface. Nothing wrong with it really just that I was so used to using a Garmin that I just couldn't adapt to it. Also, it was still a bit large for use in the cockpit of my RV-4. The AvMap costs half of what the new Garmin costs.

Thanks, I think that the Garmin 696 would probably be easier to use but it is alot more money. Bill

I've had one for a couple of years. You really need to use this in kneeboard mode (strapped to your leg) because it takes up a lot of real estate anywhere else, although a yoke mount is doable. The UI is pretty intuitive and you don't have to go too deep in the menus for most activities. The screen visibility is very good in bright light. The AA rechargeables do not provide sufficient power if you lose your generator, so a backup 12vdc supply (gel cell) is a good idea if you need the navigation accuracy. They recently added support for XM weather, but requires addition of another receiver.
