I need to replace my hangar door lift cables after nearly 35 yrs. I would like to use straps; has anyone done this replacement. I'm discussing with Schweiss; but, I'm not doing a good job of explaining what I need-straps and top/bottom connectors to my existing axle. So far we're still $8,000 or so apart.

Has anyone come up with their own system of straps.

If an other set of cables lasts you an other 35 years this question is simple — a no brainer.

Cables are quick and easy to change out — done with in a couple hours and Cheap.

If you do any welding and grinding near the door straps might not be ideal.

And lets face it no one has had a door with straps for 35 years.

I am not against straps they are fine , but not 8000 dollars better.

Bush Buggy; ya, you're probably right- easier/cheaper to replace cables. Got another email from Schweiss and they will only sell the complete motor, gearbox, etc strap package. I'm sure liability issues.

I had the same question. I needed to replace my 25 year old cables. Spoke to Schweiss at Sun N Fun about replacing my cables with their straps as my son has a door with straps. They wanted the same amount my door cost, albeit 25 years ago. Had a guy replace the cables. Took him a little over an hour. Good for another 25 years. I'll be long gone by then...

I recently replaced the cables on my bifold. Pretty easy job.
I thought it would require some trial and error to get the slack right on the two cables,
so both sides would come up evenly.
But I got it right the first try.

I'd stay with cables. One thing I hadn't thought about when originally building my hangar and trying to decide between straps and cables, is how the gearing changes as the door goes up with straps. The higher the door gets, the faster it moves as the drum gets bigger. Not a big deal that its moving faster, but I have heard of a few guys having issues when trying to start their doors going up form a half way position. Like they have their doors open half way, then try to go up. Not sure how big of a deal that really is, but cables are just so danged easy, I'd stay with what you have.

Decided too big a hassle & $$$ to convert to straps; so,,picking up 100' of 1/4' cable, clamps and thimbles from Home Depot today. All their turnbuckles state NO overhead lifting; pretty sure it's a liability thing; so, ordered four turnbuckles from Amazon delivered tomorrow. Pretty straight forward project.
