Hangers ?

Flight:
I've always had my airplanes(many) in hangers to protect them from ravagers of rain,snow and storms. I'm thinking of building a new hanger in Northern Arizona on dirt strip. I can get the land for a song with no improvements . I'm thinking of 8 conex containers (45' each ) stacked in 2 rows 90 ft. long by 2 high each side. Found I can get roof trusses pretty inexpensively -the way I pencil it our I can do the whole job
for under $50k . 90ft. long x 60' wide with double wide on one end and bifold door on other . On a 1/2 acre with runway frontage.

City of Boulder is talking about moving (at our expense) general aviation hangers to south side of field. My present hanger(leased) is 80wide x 42 deep and they want $60k to move it 1/4 mile. Think I'll just get a porta-shade and commute if they tear down hangers at Boulder City airport. Were having a LOT of trouble with Commercial operators at Boulder City airport now that the city is making money off there operations.Boulder City airport is being run by commercial operators ---- they have no respect or input from individual pilots or owners.

Bill, I was going to build some hangArs out of containers a few years ago. I think it is a good idea still.

I am beside a busy highway, so my plan was to have them only one high, but set up on two foot concrete piers, and only one deep, then make a row of them 40 ft apart.

I was going to charge $75 to 100 per plane, but also was going to rent out the container boxes as mini storage on the back side for another $75 each.

A friend of mine built a shop in Roadless Alaska out of connex containers. He designed the trusses to fit inside the containers so that it could all be barged together. Situated on a poured slab- I think it turned out real nicely for him. Good luck.

Those shipping containers are incredibly heavy and beefy. Anything constructed from them would likely be safe from most any peril.

I've always wanted to bury a bunch of them, arranged to make the ultimate subterranean emergency shelter.

I did a 40 x 42 hobby shop framed with 2 x 6 walls 12 ' high with trusses and it was 15 K for material. That included concrete

Your building idea sounds great. The real problem will be if the county ding dongs tell you it's not to code, etc.

Some of them are new, in storage, and never erected. There are a couple of real bargains, maybe one them is close to you.

I have two morton buildings 30X40 with 6" floors in them, 12' high inside...the newest one is 5 years old...$15K...could very easily be hangArs as garages..something to think about.

In Oakes, North Dakota there is a hexagon sided hangar with one door. The planes are on a rotating floor that brings the planes to face the door. No hangar rash from moving planes in and out to get to the one in the rear and it only needs one door. Snow removal, maintenance and heating are much cheaper.
I have a portable prefab calving shed that I made into a T hangar on the farm. Ernie enjoyed my engineering.

Make sure that it is technically a "temporary" or "non-permanent" building. I believe in most places the rules are different for permanent versus non-permanent stuff.

If you pour the concrete slab a few inches or a foot higher than the "inside wall" of the Conex containers it will form an anchor in the horizontal axis, meaning that probably no known amount of wind would slide the containers sideways on the dirt.

Putting a flat or nearly flat roof over it all will make it so strong winds will not impart a strong lifting force on your roof either, and a low-slope nearly flat roof will be OK in that area of the country.

Yes Bill..Morton will build what you want. Mine are both straight walled buildings but if you want a roof overhang they cost a little more. Morton has a gurantee like no other I've seen. A lot of my relation have Morton Buildings for machinery storage, barns, etc. and that's what sold me on them. The paint they use on the steel is second to non...I had 4" hail beat the hell out of my first building in '99..huge dents but the paint never cracked or pealed..can't say that for the metal siding on my house. If I was to have a hangar built my first choice would be Morton. I also have two containers but I use them independantly for storage..it would take a tornado to budge them...if that..and I got them for $0.00 :lol:
Here is a picture of the newest garage built in '03..the floor has not been poured yet. By the way..if I had room for an airstrip I would build a hangar on my place.

Bill, If I remember correctly you are in a row of some VERY nice hangars, including the one with the retired TWA pilot who's hangar is over the top in its decor. Are they really gonna kick you guys out ?????

Bill,

I think what will kill you on price is the 60' trusses, transport and setting the containers. Plus, if the county want engineering done that will cost you too That won't be cheap. I'm with these other guys and get bids on a prefab metal building. Bids are free, get lots of them.

People are dyeing for work right now and the price of steel is down too. You could probably have a building built right now for about the same price as the containers or close to it. Only way to do it cheaper is to stick frame your own but that is an awful lot of work to save a little money.

In 08 I was trying to build hangers at U77. I got a real good bid from R&M Steel in Caldwell, ID. http://www.aviationbuildingsystem.com Just my 2 cents worth.

Yep -can't fight city hall with $$$$$$ in there eyes. I'd take the old airport up in town for me.

One thing about a metal building I've never liked: with the structural members so far apart, and nothing in between but that cheezy vinyl backed insulation (if that), it really limits the options for hanging stuff on the wall. Sure, you can figure something out, but I really like having my shop and hanger framed 24" o.c., with OSB for the interior. I can screw anything anywhere, plus I can see where all the studs are for heavier items.

For the best bank for the buck check out the local guys throwing up haysheds: pressure treated posts and all metal sidewalls and roof, it is very hard to beat them for enclosing X amount of space cheap, though the initial cost advantage quickly goes away if you take it to "finish" (insulated etc.)

There is a reason most of us live in structures with a continuous, below frost line foundation, it's thermally efficient, long lived, and cost effective.

I like the Morton type buildings, especially for dead storage, it's when you want to insulate etc and make it more homey that they start to be less the way to go, at least for an old carpenter who can throw up a frame building cheaper and quicker, and do it with locally obtainable material!

My own hangar, sunk in the hillside on the lower level of my shop, is 8" thick full height concrete walls, backfilled most of the way up. Urathane foam was sprayed over the inside of the concrete after the walls were furred out with 2x4's on 24" centers, very cool in the summer heat, and very easy to keep in the 50's or so during the winter. I did live in it for a year, and that gave me the excuse to do it what I consider "right". Radiant floor heat of course!
