Happiness is...

Making the most out of a rainy afternoon!

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to hanging upside down under the dash.

Re: Happiness is...

I was just about to lament the days of having an airplane in the hangar and being able to wrench on it on a rainy day...

But then I remembered I do have that-- It's just a LOT more wrenching and it's in my garage. I work on it in my socks.

I love it when I have a good project going and the weather is crap so I don't feel like I'm missing out on some good flying!

One day I'll be in your shoes, Zane.

But my hangar leaks so until then I keep mine close.

Wow... with those sexy wheel pants and the Grove gear that'll be one speedy Pacer !

We're having a discussion on another board about the Pacer wing twist and its effect on cruise speed. Apparently the short-wings were designed to be optimized with that twist, and removing the twist slows the airplane down a bunch instead of speeding it up.

For anyone who grew up during a certain time, remembering a certain early anime TV series... "Go Speed Pacer, go Speed Pacer, go Speed Pacer Go!"

Re: Happiness is...

Nothing like the Zen of working in the hangar on a crappy day. Every hour spent " working" is paid back many times over. My only problem is the Rotax is so reliable (like the Toyotas I drive) I don't need to do much other then oil changes (the only time the cowl comes off). Coming up on 1800 hrs now. I should reach TBO next year. YAWN..... All I plan to do is replace some hoses/ rubber parts, even though they look like new. Of course, the more trouble free, the more of a surprise when trouble happens, I constantly have to fight complacency, and remind myself that stuff happens.

Hmm, that's weird. Discussions with the Pierces seem to lead to the opposite conclusion. My flaps reflex, which accomplishes the same as reducing wing twist without all those nasty stalling side-products. I haven't done any significant testing to tell if it makes a huge difference or not since I've been working through cooling issues. Baffling needs replaced. Seems to make a difference though.

Re: Happiness is...

This was my view for much of the afternoon / evening:
Image

On the plus side, I got all the under dash wiring complete. What a pain. I went up in amperage from 35 to 60 on the alternator, which required rewiring from 10 to 8 ga. Plus the new alternator is internally regulated and over-voltage protected, so there were some old components that had to come out and new wiring routed.

I replaced the old 35a breaker with a 60a current limiter, so now I have a hole in my dash that's labeled "ALT"

I got the idea that it'd be neat to wire an indicator lamp in there since my new alternator has the wiring for an optional alternator out indicator. Heck, it's already labeled! Problem is, I can't find any good ones. I made a trip to the aviation department of the local radio shack and they didn't have anything worthwhile. I've also done about 30 minutes of internet searching and the best I can come up with is this:
Image
They don't look that bright.

Does anyone have any experience with something really bright?

Unless your old alternator went gunnysack, I'm curious why you did this? Does your airplane have an unusually large electrical load? My C180 has the original 35A generator, and despite suggestions to "upgrade" to a larger-capacity alternator, I have no plans to change it as it keeps the battery charged just fine-- "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind.

Try giving Digi Key a call for any electronics stuff. http://www.digikey.com/?&WT.srch=1 It's an amazing place....in Thief River Falls, MN. Very helpful to me over the phone on a project I was working on. Their catalog is HUGE.

Started by a guy as a teenager in his parent's basement. His parents ran a bakery. He grew the Digi Key company, while also running the bakery after his parents retired. He's still the baker......

Amazing place.

It wasn't charging the battery. It was broke, so I fixed it.

Firewall forward wiring complete:

MOC OK!

Next up is gabbing a battery box for the new earthX, cleaning up the wiring behind the panel, and reinstalling the interior.

This whole process would've gone much faster if I hadn't accidentally dropped stuff into the floor and had to remove the interior to remove the FOD. Next time I'm going to tape down some sheeting like a painter.

Re: Happiness is...

Carburetor air intake plenum looks good, so does the exhaust and the front/center crankcase baffling. If you're looking to improve cruise speed and engine cooling, take a look at the cooling/cowling design on Peter Garrison's Melmoth 2. There's a big chunk of speed there, when compared to Piper's original system. Not to mention having better tools to keep your engine running better.

Re: Happiness is...

Cam, Looks like you have a lip on the bottom of the cowl where the air exits already, Lots of discussion on this and various fixes on the RV forums! Glastars have the same problems!
You mite extend it just a bit or try another angle to create a little more vacumn on the bottom of the cowl. I had to do that on my M6 Maule to get it to cool correctly as it had a bastard cowl on it? 1/4" made a difference on the length, also have one on my RV6, it is sealed up on both ends so the air has to come out there and I think that is what makes it work!! #-o
Have FUN

The warning light in my panel is similar to this:

http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/6123132130F/350-2100-ND/1530500

It's about 1/2" diameter so hard to miss when it lights up. Not sure of you want something that large or not? Your plane looks great with that slim alternator in there, BTW!

It looks like he's essentially turned the typical pressure cowl upside down... Not sure how it'd be more beneficial... Different, for sure. I'm already using much smaller inlets and exhaust to reduce cooling drag, as well as a much more streamlined cowl to reduce form drag. I think once I replace the floppy stock RV baffle rubber it'll fix my cooling problems.

Thanks GT! That lip only extends to where the cowl mounts. It's clean where the cowl exhaust is. There's also a small lip below the cowl exhaust. Here's a couple of pictures:

(that lip is straightened out now.)

I'll get you a better one of the forward face of the firewall tomorrow.

I measured the hole in the panel and it's about 1/2", so I think I'm going to order one of those. Thanks!

This alternator is much better than my last. It started charging the battery immediately after cranking. The old one I would have to rev the engine to between 1200 and 1800 to get it to start charging.

The EarthX cranked amazingly fast as well. Unfortunately to permanently mount it I'll have to make new battery cables. It hooks up differently than the old lead-acid battery does. Right now it contacts the yoke tube at full nose down elevator and I don't have any slack left in the cables to move it. So I'm going to re-mount the old battery for now while the new wires come in the mail. This will also give me a chance to fab up a nice new battery box instead of hacking up the existing one to "make it work."

Cam, not sure how to draw on this so will try verbal!!
If you built a small triangular fillet on each end of your tab, then the air would have to exit over the tab and not blow out the side? Hope that make sense #-o ??
Also you might flatten it out a bit to see what happens, looks pretty severe!! Might be causing turbulation instead of a vacuum??
I think 30-45 degrees would work better for U. Looks like almost 60??
Look at some cowl flaps on the ones that have them, Long small angle! I know when I open the cowl flaps on my 210 it changes the angle of the airplane and I have to trim if in level flight, ya might even go faster?? =D>
Comments worth every penny you spent!! 8)
