Hawaii "Backcountry" 2014.04.03

Since I do not have an airplane here right now...

I consider the ocean to be "backcountry" too. It covers more uninhibited area than any other type of surface. The Pacific has 10,000 islands and covers 4 hemispheres. Pretty neat in my opinion.

This is my front yard today, the deck of my sailboat. The first major South Swell of the 2014 season arrived with complete perfection. Unbelievable waves for surfing. I surfed Kaisers and the locals actually let me have a few lefts. 4-6' 20Kt offshore classic Hawaii.

Image

I also like riding backcountry trails too. My favorite area is the Big Island of Hawaii. This picture is Ala Moana Park however. Great place to walk after dinner and watch the Sunset.

Thanks for watching see you later!

10" of new snow here the last few days, the snowboarding has been some of the best of the year =D> Riding that bike in Hawaii looks pretty cool also! Say hi to my ex wife, she's been a resident for 35 years now. Preferred it over Idaho, go figure.

What Island is your former wife on? We live in Honolulu over looking the Harbor.

Idaho is where the snow is. One of these days! Keep the trip reports coming! Happy flying.

Here I am this January 2014 trying to ski in Oregon...

There were military exercises. But, I did not follow them closely, except my wife had to work during the weekends.

What was going on? Was that the reduction of force that was scheduled. I know some helos were getting relocated.

Yeah, it was 25 CAB's aircraft coming into port and needing ferrying over to Wheeler. They were on post deployment leave when the boat came in so the unit did the right thing and requested a contingent from AK come down to move the birds instead of recalling their Soldiers to do it. I got to come down and help out. It was all point A to B flying, but neat to be over Pearl Harbor. I have a great picture of one of us taking off low over the water with the USS Missouri in the background.

I don't have the original on my phone anymore but here's a screenshot of my phone since it's my wallpaper!Image

I was over there 2nd week of January last year. Rented a 172, lucky for me it came with an instructor. Never have flown in class C let alone class B.
I liked Kalaupapa airport on Molokai Image
Had some good waves that day, taking off on 5

JDW,

Who's aircraft did you rent? Pictures look real familiar!

Kalaupapa is really fun. There are still 5 patients who are under care for leperosy. Used to work on the lighthouse for gas money a time ago for the USCG

It's the tallest lighthouse in the US. When I first sailed my 30' boat from California it was a comfort to identify it, specially when using celestial and dead reckoning. Molokai is unreal!

I have 1700 hours here! Call me next time!

Cool gig glad you came!

Re: Hawaii "Backcountry" 2014.04.03

JDW,

Regarding Pearl Harbor...

The Arizona Memorial is very familiar. My wife and I hade several boats in Rainbow Marina (DOD facility) across form it. Leaving Pearl Harbor with aircraft carriers and 400' nuke submarine was interesting. There was an airstrip on Ford Island, which was used for solo students but, it's closed now. They are building military housing on the island.

If you have more pictures I would love to see them!

Re: Hawaii "Backcountry" 2014.04.03

George has been a very good friend. I was low on fuel after a SAR on Molokai and he flew his Navajo out to rescue me. George jumped out and siphoned 10 gallons and that put me back in the air home. I will never forget that. George is a really cool dude.

Next time look me up! Glad it was a great flight!
