Re: Hay field landing.

I need to cut some trees and put in a culvert. I have made a call to fern_hopper he is a fire fighter/logger and is looking for a faller for me.

Hey Rob,
Congrats on the new airstrip project. I guess it is now a race to see who will land their Maule on their property first? As far as falling trees goes you might consider hiring an excavator guy like Terry. An excavator can accurately drop the trees and remove the rootballs too. Thats great if you don't have any powerlines to deal with, I'm jealous about that. Anyway good luck my freind.

Hay field landing.

Hey James. I'm not building a strip. My trees are in an area the wheels will never touch. I am sure the govment powers would never allow a strip. Thus I will land in the hay field. Hay field landing is legal.
Cheers my friend.

Looking forward to it. Been awhile since I got to kill a tree.

Hey Rob, you must know Bill Barrett, he lives there & has a C-185 & a SuperCub. Owns an auto fix-it shop in Troutdale & has a cabin here on Nimpo, comes up several times a year to play.

That should be your new name "OregonHoneyBadgerMaule". Nah, too long. How about "OregonBadgerMaule" :D

How about just "Honey"? :P

Rob, I'll be happy to grab my eco-friendly electric chainsaw and help cut up anything within reach of A/C power and an extension cord. No, seriously.

Re: Hay field landing.

Rob, having a landing strip or even a hayfield for an occasional landing is the one thing I dream about most. Good for you for getting it going! Hope to see you on your travels. John

Re: Hay field landing.

Picture is worth a thousand words.
What is the source of the water running down slope?

Just a suggestion here but with a drop like that you could use a ground level grate on the upper end to eliminate the inlet depression hole at that end of the culvert and let the lower end run out through another grate laid to match the grade and slope of the hill and eliminate that outlet hole too. They could be supported by a concrete box to eliminate erosion. They could be similar to a cattle guard grate, only with closer bars. The wheels could roll right across and even mowing would be a breeze. That way no weed hole at each end and you don't have to worry about dropping a wheel off one end or the other.

My truck & trailer get about 10mph..let's see about a 2800 miles 'round trip..that's about $980 for fuel..thanks but I think I would rather use the money for avgas.
Now let me see...if you would pay for the gas to haul them off...?

You have some beautiful trees there Rob to cut down. I work my ass off trying to grow trees like them and haul a lot of water. I will make it out there someday, but I probably won't bring the truck. :(

Thanks Terry, I'll get some.

Hey dirtstrip: rain, ditch by the road. Only has water when it rains hard, the rest of the time it is dry.

Good day

Re: Hay field landing.

If I can make this work Rob you'll have no issue with your terrain features...... it's 500ft, 15% at the top and it ends
into the dining room window. Good part is I have no drainage issues and can take off year round outside of haying season.

Looking forward to your successes it's a great great feeling to have the ability to land at home! ~CRAZED

And if you left the turf a little long it would provide a little more slow down drag after touch down, but with enough grade you probly don't need it. In Rob's neck of the woods braking may be complicated by all of that valley moisture! But again, with enough slope and Rob's skills that shouldn't be an issue either!

The pics speak a thousand words!! Looks way too cool (and do-able)!!
