HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Happy New Year Everyone!

Santa brought me a HD170 camera and Magix editing software for Christmas, and this is the first trial flight/video. I still have a few bugs to work out, namely the jello effect, but really like them both so far!

We took off from OGD Friday morning for a quick hop over the mountain to Morgan, UT. We had a quick stop on the ground to let my friend inquire in hanger availability before heading back. It was a gorgeous day! The winds were a bit gusty in OGD, but were calm in Morgan. Although it was a short flight, it was great getting hanging out in Morgan for a bit, talking with a couple of local pilots and watching a Cherokee do some touch and goes. Great way to start the day!

Love that area. I usually head up the canyon to Heber if I'm going North and pass right over Morgan. Nice video and looking forward to more!

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Hey Cory:

Wow was Santa nice to you. Thank God for the image stabilization with the HD, it looks like you make a good landing. :D

I love my camera and all the landings look great. Be sure to follow up on the Software re: like/dislikes.

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Thanks guys. The only thing I didn't like about the landing was it was a bit long. I hadn't flown this aircraft for a while and I forget how slippery the newer 172s can be (compared to the older ones). The downhill slope didn't help either, but I'll take it. The good news is that getting the kinks worked out will require more test flights. Good reason to go flying. "But Dee, don't you want me to be able to use that new camera that you gave me? To use it I HAVE to get the bugs worked out." :D Next is to get it on the 182.

So far I really like Magix. It took a little bit to learn what does what, and I know I've just scratched the surface, but after watching the quick start videos, you can pretty much start doing basic editing. Hopefully I'll get somewhat proficient with it and the camera before Caveman!

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Software Question: I'm looking at buying this software for my new HD170, too. I'm wondering how much computer do you have to run it? I'm only running a laptop, relatively new, but limited horsepower to be sure (Win7, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD, 2.00 MHz P6100 Processor).

Some of the reviews are complaining about system slow-downs and general issues like this. Can you comment on this?

Thanks in advance!

That should do it, what takes the logest is rendering the video after you have edited it. It may be one of those things that you just have to get the editing done, then go have a couple drinks while it is doing it's thing rendering it. As far as the 500GB... I have two 500GB hard drives in my laptop but am about to swap those out for three 1TB hard drives. I have the two 500GB drives almost full with pics and vids! When you start downloading hours and hours of HD vids, then editing, you end up with a whole lot of space burning up real fast! Alot will also depend on what graphics / video card you have in your laptop as to how fast it will run..

Another issue you may run into... If you are having troubles running your videos and they are slow and jerky on play back, the damn WMP defaults to 32 bit on some of the updates so you have to go in and manually edit the registry so it will run 64 bit. I fought that issue for a year till I figured it out last month. A quick google search on the subject will take you to several step by step how to's on the registry edit.

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Leni - You're much more in the know on this than I am. I don't even know what I have/need for a graphics card. Where do I look to find this out?

All I can find on the topic is Processor: Intel64 Family 6 Model 37 Stepping 5 :?:

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

I have 4GB RAM, 2.9 MHz processor, and 750GB hard drive. It seems to run it just fine. MountainMatt's original thread on the review of the HD170 has several posts dealing with computers that might have some info you are looking for.

My work laptop doesn't meet the specs that are listed on the software, but I think I'll have the tech guys load it on anyway since that is where I do most of my editing. I'll let you know what I find out. Hopefully they will be able to load it today and I'll get some video to edit next week.

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Nice video and editing job, Grassstrippilot.

I have the HD170 Stealth and use AVS Video Editor on the .MOV files. It does a good job and isn't too expensive. You can find free .MOV to .AVI file converters and then use Windows Movie Maker to edit them, too. My laptop isn't anything really fast - HP G60-200 with 4GB RAM, 2.1GHz CPU, 220GB hard drive with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. There's some jerkiness when editing 1080p resolution videos, but it works pretty well with 720p.

I have a Maule MX-7-180 with a 4-cylinder engine and the jello effect is more pronounced than a 6-cylinder engine due to the increased vibration. Power setting also has an effect and the undulation in the video is greater during climbs. The HD170 has very good image stabilization, so landings look much smoother in the videos than in reality.

Ha! I think courierguy's tagline is, "If it looks smooth, it might be. If it looks rough, it is!" Sounds like that applies to video as well.

Nice scenery!

Re: HD170 and Magix First Attempt

Cool video! Nice music choice, good video clarity and silky smooth too. Unlike my GoPro, I like how the HD170 captures a nice wide area without giving things that 'fisheye' look.

Looking forward to your future efforts,
Don

Nice video Cory! Good to see others out flying for the fun of it and see where they go. Music was appropriate too.
