Headed for Home!?

Hi all
Just about ready to head south for the winter. going all the way to Washington State!!
Hope to get out of Nulato by the end of the week, if weather is good should be headed to Anchorage then down the beach to America.
After a few days there I have to fly to SOCAL and back. Hope to make that a leisurely trip. Going to swap aircraft there.

Re: Headed for Home!?

Hi all from Ketchican
Left Nulato Monday night, Spot2 quit working after 6 days of trying it out???
Oil cooler froze?? on right engine, anyway turned back and parked, Had winterized the office and house so had no water but did have warm bed,
We left next morning at daylight, 11:00 flew to Galena, -25, had to get gas as used my extra the night before. $7.50 a gallon, Got to Anchorage after cold trip, as the heater pop off popped when I landed in Galena and did not figure that out until off the ground, probably should have turned around but did not, cold 2 hours to Anchorage, Left the Seneca at Signature in the hangar as I left the heaters and extension cords in Nulato!!
Left PANC today, supposed to have really ugly outflow winds to 45 kts, good ride to Cape Suckling at 7500 then dropped down and flew the beach to Yakutat, Refueled and headed for PAKT, first time I have been in cruise with the Seneca making 90 KTS!! was a little rough out in front of the Alsek drainage, Had to climb to 9500, then out in front of Mt. Fairweather the wind was actually blowing up hill about 10 miles out, had some of that 15inches and still gaining a 1000fpm at 180!!, only hit our heads once, thank goodness never did find the severe they were talking about after Cross Sound things mellowed out and had a slow but beautiful flight, got here about 7 PM. Headed farther south in the morning, Had a great dinner at the Ocean View in PAKT, Supper 8 takes dogs so have warm place to stay!

Oh Galena...man I've got some memories there...one armed bandit and all!

Glad to hear you've made it to Ketchican (love that place) safe...even if it was eventful. Have a good rest and remainder of a trip home!

Re: Headed for Home!?

Hey George,

Hope you trip home goes well. I can tell you from experience that specific Seneca II flys much better with the back end full of bank checks. Thinking back, I don't think I ever flew that plane in the daylight?

Another nice option on that airplane is after you cycle the boots it sometimes clogs the pitot tube. Shooting an instrument approach to minimums at night in a snowstorm without an airspeed indicator separates the men from the boys. That plane always got me back to Helena.

Anyway Doug thought you might have some skis that might fit my Maule. When you get home could you please give me a call? We are getting snow here in Spokane already, and should have a white Thanksgiving too.

Blue skys & tailwinds,

James

Re: Headed for Home!?

Well, made it home fine, headed for KBLI and got to Bella Colla and the 696 weather said there was a break all the way to 63 S so turned left and flew home.
(sure do like the weather on the map!!) iPad is great while on the ground but haven't figured it all out in the air??
Did fly a little slow going by Prince Rupert tho, had a ground speed of 86 kits for about 30 miles.
Good to Be home.
Finally got my computer set up and online.
Took the 195 out for a ride, sure was nice to get in a tailwheel again.(sure makes the Seneca seem like a fine running sewing machine)(Rumble, shake)
James, I do have a set of wheel ski's with gear legs, I don,t know that I want to sell them, but you are more than welcome to come take a look and use them this winter, they have sat around for to long and the ptex needs replacing.PM me and we can set something up.
Ford, I'll look forward to meeting Raven, Jake has turned into a good traveler.
Might be headed for SOCAL Monday to get that amphib, will look at the weather and see what route will work best.

Re: Headed for Home!?

Hello ALL
Going from 63S to KCNO
Ugly weather in the NW so going to try and head to SOCAL Friday or Sat after Turkey Day.
Had nice welcome home, Spent yesterday thawing pipes out!!
Don't know which way is the best route yet, inland or down the beach.
If I go inland will probably stop at Elko for fuel, Does anyone else have a good suggestion for a stop. either going down or coming back up?
Will have more time to visit on the way back home.
By the way I finally got my Spot 11 to work and it shows a great trail from PAKT home. The cold really sucked the juice out of the battery's

George: If you are heading to So Cal you might as well keep on truckin. Raven needs to have a big brother teach her the love of water AND you won't be thawing any more pipes. I'll leave the light on for you. :P FF

George, as a further inducement, here is the front porch. Ray could use a big brother to help the transition from lake paddling to ocean swimming AND you won't have to worry about thawing pipes.

Re: Headed for Home!?

For the iPad to receive current weather you need to be low enough to receive a cell signal. There is an external GPS available now too, works with both versions of the iPad.

Thanks, the gps on the iPad works great, used it all the way from Nulato thru Anchorage and down the coast and across Canada to 63s.
Was just trying to get better weather. Hard to beat the stuff on the Garmin while your flying.
Have both foreflight and wing to see which works better form me. Having you plane on the approach plate is kind of nifty!!
Enjoy GT
