Heavy Duty Nose on 1962+ 182

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Heavy Duty Nose on 1962+ 182

I know there has been some discussion on here about getting the approval for a heavy duty nose fork on the fastback 182, but at what year did the heavy duty nose become a factory option? It is my understanding that those planes can get a field approval and it is much easier to throw the heavy duty nose on. Im a 62, first year of swept tail. any ideas? Thanks a lot for all the help.

1962 was the first airframe with the rear window, called omnivision i think.. 1960 and 1961 were fastback 3 windows like the 185 and later 180's but had the swept tail..

62 was also the first year with the extra 4" width for you guys with larger girth. To see if the heavy duty (600x6) fork and wheel were an option in your year plane, simply find a parts book for that year and see if it is in there. If so then you can put it on with a simple log bood entry. No field approval required.

All that is needed is log book entry for superseeded part numbers from old small to 206 fork and tube. Don't let anyone cut down the strut. Find AP that has experience with the mod.

I have done this on 63 E model and it keeps the prop up and out of fod.

Had two feds drop by and look at installation and log book for their education, and this was in Alaska.

Simple but very good to do.

The 182E is a 1962, that is the plane that I have. But thanks for all the help. You guys know anyone in Colorado that could do the mod? An IA would be able to do this mod without a problem, right? or is it more tricky..

Also, are double pucks necessary if you put 8.00 on the mains?

I've got 850's all three points and single puck on my 1958 182. No problem stopping with in 700 ft. But, is your gross weight more than 2650 with the wider cabin?

Re: Heavy Duty Nose on 1962+ 182

Nope, gross weight stayed the same for the later models and useful load suffered. they just added more weight for us with the electronic flap motor, and a few other things.. So, 8.00 would probably be alright without the brake upgrade. Thanks for the insight.

My 67 182 had a 2800 pound gross. They went up from there to a max of 3150 I think.

Gross weight went to 2950 for the P and Q models. Then to 3100 after that.

There is just a "paperwork" STC, no structural modifications necessary, available to up the P and Q models gross weight take off weight to 3100.

FWIW, my '74 182P has a useful load of 1300 pounds with the "FreshPick" STC.
