Re: Helmets?

you know what I would like to know after the crash in Delta Jct... Can we compile a list of head injuries being the primary cause of injury? The guy that crashed there was an awarded combat veteran who made an instinctual mistake from what I am told by my dad who heard it first hand from witnesses. He tried to make the impossible turn after landing with an engine that "made noises" before landing in the first place. I can't say for certain, but would a helmet have helped?

On that same subject - I fly with my 1 year old all the time... is there a helmet that anyone can vouch for for a young un?

Re: Helmets?

Snowboarding, skateboarding helmets have small sizes. I have an old skateboarding helmet that is just plastic and a small amount of foam but provided some protection. Its a 100 here and humid, my helmet is hot until 5,000. Hard to get a good ear seal on my Gentex but a good seal on my mask and warm at altitude.

Re: Helmets?

I am looking at these A- Alpha Half Shell (Peltor, Sordin, LS, DC) helmets and putting the pictures next to my DC H10-30s, will I have to take the padding our of my headset to make it fit or will I have to order a bigger size helmet than my head? Do the helmets have some sort of retaining system to keep the headset in there, or do I put them on separately every time. How well are these going to protect my head if I ever get into that situation? I can't seem to find a lot of info online other than from the tactical application.

That's a great looking helmet, but I want to make sure I am not buying a $100 paperweight when its all said and done.

Thanks!

Re: Helmets?

907pilot...is your 1 year old in a childs seat? That is better than a helmet for him and once he is in it, I think a helmet might be unusable because it will push his head forward too much. I'd go with one of the expensive ones with side impact protection.

Re: Helmets?

I have her in one of those super-deluxe car seats with the side impact. I thought about the helmet thing for her before I bought the seat and came up with the same answer that you posted.

Thanks!

907pilot,

I replied early in this thread that I wear a A-Alpha Halfshell helmet with a David Clark headset while riding in the back of helicopters in my day job. I'm responsible for evaluating and ensuring the safe operation of UH-60, CH-47, CH-53, CH-46, LUH-72, V-22 flights in an Army training area in Louisiana. The helmet is the only protection I have other than hope. I removed the padding from the headset and inserted the headset inside the helmet. The helmet's padding then sandwiches the headset into the helmet. .

From reading this thread the A-Alpha works for some and not for others. I have to wear a special david Clark headset that has a mic on either side and the A-Alpha is the only thing I've found that works with it. I also installed a night vision goggle mount so I'm not blind while doing night operations.

We also have CEP's installed on each side of the headset that are the same as the ones on our flight helmets. These allow you to put in ear plugs that are tied into the audio in the headset. Not ANR, but the system works fantastic for both my helicopter flight helmet and the David Clark I use at work. One a regular headset there would only be a connector on one side with a Y-cord that went to earplugs in each ear. You can see the connector in the first photo above on the bottom of the headset.

Again, this solution obviously doesn't work for all headsets and all individuals, but it's has been a great solution for me.

Re: Helmets?

I wear mine in the helicopter while I'm working and prolly should in the while I'm flying in the sticks. All of our tanker pilots wear helmets, but they are required to. Most crop dusters wear helmets but some of the more stubborn ones don't. I have a MSA Gallett and love it, very comfortable even on a 11-12 hour day. Getting ANR installed by Headsets of Amarillo is a big plus as well!

Thanks Cambo, that's exactly the info I'm looking for... question for you, when we fly in the mountains, we often stretch our necks in and out to look at features or other the wing and all... does the helmet reduce your field of view considerably or is the reduction not significant at all?
Also, do you have ANC (Active Noise Cancelling/Reduction) on yours? I seem to find the ANR option for rotary on the Merit apparel website but not for fixed wing. Also, do you have single or dual visor? if dual, what colors inner/outer ?

At first the Gentex seemed to be a good option as well but they are clear about it, their helmets only offer limited impact protection which goes against the reason why I'm getting a helmet... so MSA it will likely be.

Thanks much, BCT

I've got the dual visor, one dark and one yellow. The yellow increases visibility in low light conditions but I rarely use it. Clear is nice if your hanging your head out the window a lot but I doubt you would in a airplane. No restricted visibility. The visor tucking up in the helmet is nice because it doesn't get scratched when the helmet is rolling around. I've got ANR from Headsets of Amarillo and it works well. They have a small plug that you can have wired into your aircraft that allows you to plug in and not use batteries. If you find your self in a aircraft with out one they also provide a battery pack that you can plug into.

Thanks much, BCT

Re: Helmets?

I really like that idea with the Alpha half shell though, I just don't like the David Clamps. I wonder if you could get it to work with a pair of bose.

You can do anything if you throw enough money at it.

So what do you tell your passengers when your putting on a helmet and don't have one for them?

I don't need no stinking helmet for bikes, motorcycles, skiing, snowmobiling, airplanes or firefighting. If you want one, that is fine.

You tell your passenger " I don't give a rats ass about you but your sitting less than a foot away......so you've got a pretty good chance!"

Have you ever seen any pax in a chopper wearing helmets!! If they ask, I explain it's a grade 5 concept...ODDS!! Stacked agains the pilot, not pax! and besides, the places where I really need the extra melon layer is for places I dont take pax too!

Oh and Rob, Super Dave called and he wants his helmet back!

Re: Helmets?

I'd second the Gallet comments. I've worn them for 7 plus hours and still very comfortable, in fact, much more so than wearing a D/C or any other headset for that long, due to difference in clamping pressure.

I found the stock Gallet ANR to be every bit as good as bose.

DO order the Oregon Aero Fit Kit, though. You fit the helmet by installing various thickness pads inside. When you get things to APPEAR to fit, you wear the helmet for a long day in the plane, and see if there are hot spots, or noise leaks, etc. If so, shuffle the pads to fix that. Don't send back the "spare" pads till you're SURE you've got the fit JUST RIGHT.

It's easy to wear a helmet for five minutes or half an hour, and no problems, only to find it creates a hot spot after an hour or two. If you get there, you won't want to wear that helmet, which defeats the purpose of the helmet.
