Help keep Waldo Lake, OR open to floatplanes

Forwarded Message from Columbia Seaplane Pilots Assn:

Renewed request for comments on Waldo Lake in Oregon.

The Oregon Marine Board has received over 3000 letters and emails from people wanting the Waldo Lake to stay seaplane free. This is not in your best interest and I encourage you to act before the April 10th deadline for comments. Please go the Columbia Seaplane Pilots Association website http://c-spa.org/v2/access/comment-to-osmb.html. We have made it easier to submit a comment and while we don't encourage "Button Pushing" and robo emails this matter has become critical. There have been less than a dozen submissions supporting removing or revising the current rule that became effective in 2010.

Thanks for you help, if you have any questions please contact me, Bill Wainwright at: [email protected] or 503 293 7627

Re: Help Keep Waldo Lake Open to Float Planes

I have sent my email: The easy button on the CSPA site inserts some message text for you, but it is incomplete and could use some help, so I augmented mine a little. If I remember correctly, Waldo Lake is already closed to power boats, hence my "floatplanes and unlike power boats" tack, even though the late Dave Wiley used the opposite approach to gain acceptance.

Dear Oregon State Marine Board members,

I am contacting you to request that you repeal the rule prohibiting floatplanes on Waldo Lake.

As a lifelong Oregonian, pilot, avid backpacker and paddler who has enjoyed Waldo lake via all modes and uses, I strongly support keeping it open to floatplanes.

Floatplanes are first and foremost a vehicle of conveyance to reach Waldo Lake, the same as a car, truck or SUV. They do not pollute the marine environment and do not create a safety hazard to others on the lake, as they do not "drive" around the lake for enjoyment like a boat; Floatplanes use the lake only as a runway. They land or takeoff, which amounts to a very light footprint. Commonly misperceived as powerboats, floatplanes do not insert their propeller or exhaust pipe into the water, and thus have virtually zero impact on the biological sanctity of a body of water, a conclusion supported by specific US Forest Service study.

Floatplanes are entitled to use the waters of the State of Oregon as their highway, which is protected by State and Federal law, in the absence of any safety or scientific concerns. Waldo lake is so seldom used for floatplanes, that the ruling to prohibit them is considered by most to be an egregious preemptive attack on the rights of Oregonians to use our lands and waters.

Please repeal the rule.

Sincerely,

Zane T. Jacobson

Additionally, $500 has been donated to the Columbia Seaplane Pilots Assoc Legal Fund on behalf of BCP.

Re: Help keep Waldo Lake, OR open to floatplanes

Columbia Seaplane Pilots Association thanks BCP for the generous contribution to our legal fund. It was currently tapped out because we have put it all into the legal fees for this effort to get the closure of Waldo Lake to seaplanes lifted.

We are grateful for any comment letters that you might write to the Oregon State Marine Board in support of this effort. The special hearing by the marine Board will be held at 6 PM in Springfield Oregon so any comments need to be received befor then or presented in person at the meeting. Meeting information is on the link that follows. Follow this website link to view our archive of past information on Waldo Lake http://www.c-spa.org/v2/access/waldo-lake.html and write a letter to the OSMB. Yes, the last line in the filled out email is incomplete because it is hoped that after becoming familiar with the issue you will add a few words of your own.

Being pilots it is especially important that you also advise the Oregon Dept. of Aviation how you feel about this closure. You can write them a separate email or just cc to this address: [email protected] If you write a seperate message addresss it to Mark Gardner, Chairman and board members, Oregon dept. of Aviation Board, c/o Mitch Swecker Executive Director.

Thanks for your help in advance,
