Any state that has Seattle can’t be stable, same for Portland, same for San Francisco.

I am not surprised Montana is full :)

Notice I did not recommend Utah! Crappy skiiing, drought conditions, over crowding, slow internet, 2nd driest state in the nation.

South Dakota does sound promising

Prior to driving through there for the first time in July, I would have never given it a second thought when people say it's nice. Holy smokes – it was gorgeous. Also never realized that's where Sturgis is located. Those bikers actually had a reason to start going there.

Spearfish and Sturgis, both nice little towns from what I saw sailing by on I-90. The countryside was like the Shire.

So far-- unfortunately the politicans are working on correcting that oversight.

And, they tax the dickens out of most everything else. Any state with no "name that" tax probably has a few others that compensate.

Re: Help me pick a place to live

I lived in Moscow, ID for a few years and loved it. Small university town, great flying, flew to McCall, Sandpoint, Johnson Creek, Coeur d'Alene. I'd move back if a job opened up nearby.

Currently in Logan, UT and the airport has a great community feel to it. The FBO puts on a fly-in breakfast on the second Saturday of every month which draws lots of homebuilt and backcountry folks in. Lots of recreation up Logan Canyon, a few places to ski. However, air quality in the winter is abysmal, housing has gone way up, occasionally the airport is bit too busy.

Yes, Logan is very busy, to me anyway! Thanks for bringing the second Saturday breakfast thing to my attention, I'll mark it on my calendar. Just around an hour's flight for me, with many LZ's along the way, I too have always gotten a good vibe about that airport, busy though it may be.

Re: Help me pick a place to live

Whoever said NH is a wise man. I am a product of northern NH public education and now get to move rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong for a living. Guess it could have been worse.

Another mention was Durango, CO. That is current home. They nailed it with the wrong people are showing up (homeless camp, crime, etc). I had a new F150 stolen right from my driveway a year and a half ago...but we seem to be starting to push back. Finally. Hangar space is not easy to come by either. Luckily there is an abundance of private education options. The public education system in CO does not have the greatest reputation.

Both are wildly beautiful and ready for the adventurous heart. If you enjoy shopping, look elsewhere. Good luck.

Up until a few years back I would have echoed the recommendation of the Idaho spots, but commonplace wildfires have changed my mind. I know of a handful of long time Idaho resident pilots who are considering leaving or have already left for the summer seasons due to air quality.

You’re from Long Beach aye? Move north and stay in your state? Nothing wrong with NorCal. But I did hear South Carolina is the next new Idaho, plenty of trees there for sure.

So a guy comes on here, first post, asks a question and then does not return and say thanks or contribute anything to the conversation. Ok, well, good luck to him.

Yup, lots of smoke in the summer, and don't forget the ticks, can't see why anyone would move here! Seriously, if anyplace was frigging perfect, it'd be quickly ruined by too many people moving there....Idaho has enough drawbacks for many of them to look elsewhere, thank God. It's all a trade off: low wages, but a low cost of living, is one example.

Siskiyou County in Northern California was perfect for 35 years Then the pot growers moved in. It took me 5 years to figure that out so I moved to Payette, ID a year ago. It s great. Built a new hangar. Lots of room for more hangars. A lot of the other airports in the area are built out.

Re: Help me pick a place to live

I'm glad you flew the Cuckoo's nest. I couldn't believe the Shasta Valley when I flew over it this summer. Greenhouses everywhere. Just amazing. I read an article that Weed finally gave up and embraced the dark side of its name and is trying to market it.

I sure like the Payette area. We spend most of our visits in the Frank and Selway, but I'll never forget the incredible time we had in Weiser for the eclipse in 2018. That's the definition of western hospitality for me.

Re: Help me pick a place to live

This shot I took this morning kind of says how my area is changing: in the foreground is the sheep camp wagon that the Peruvian cowboy lives in when the local rancher grazes his cattle after the grain is cut. Further back is a new home on 80 acres going in (along with 2 more) that a guy from California just bought last year. Behind the new place is my 40 acre compound. Lucky for me, the "new guy" is extremely aviation friendly, his father was a crop duster and FBO owner :D And here's a thought: IF a "new guy" didn't like my little flying operation, I suppose I could mention that, "yeah it's time to split the 40 acres into 2.5 acre lots and move on, enjoy your new neighbors, and their barking dogs, and kids on ATV's, see ya!" It's always good to have a backup plan.Image
