HELP! Stuck in Troutdale, OR - Alternator Woes

Just picked up an experimental Bushmaster to ferry home to Alaska. Landed in Troutdale with a dead alternator. Engine is a Lycoming IO-360-A3B6D. I don't know what the Alternator is, but I assume it's not OEM, as it's 12V.

Any ideas on what I've got here? No markings whatsoever.

Re: HELP! Stuck in Troutdale, OR - Alternator Woes

Alternators have been the biggest thorn in my aviation experience! I empathize.

I think I'd be on the phone to Plane Power when they open in AL tomorrow morning. They'll tell you what parts they recommend. The time zone difference will give you a nice jump on the day. You should be able to find one that can be delivered to you on a Saturday. Aviall or Aircraft Spruce.

If you order from ACS, order from Georgia. Again, the time zone will work to your advantage.

Being experimental, you may be able to cobble something together from the local autoparts store.

Re: HELP! Stuck in Troutdale, OR - Alternator Woes

Odds are the builder just grabbed an alternator for that engine based on two things: output/current rating and the mount style. The latter being a bigger deal if the aircraft is just a basic electrical configuration and 50A covers everything.

As for mount, there's 2 types: boss and bracket if I recall. Figure that out and find the closet match belt drive lycoming alternator from plane power.

PM oregonmaule to see if he can point you in the right direction for local parts on the field.

Thanks for the replys. Biggest issue now is finding an alternater that spins that proper direction... Off to NAPA

Re: HELP! Stuck in Troutdale, OR - Alternator Woes

Sounds dumb but be sure it's not just a broken wire.
The two "dead" alternators I've had turned out to be a broken wire, right at the crimp-on connector where it attached to the alternator.

Looks like they took the cooling fan off the pulley.
I'm not sure if an alternator cares which way it turns?? But the cooling fans do??
Good Luck.
I know there is a good engine shop there.

Re: HELP! Stuck in Troutdale, OR - Alternator Woes

Alternators don't care which direction they spin but spinning an automotive alt backwards can eat the brushes faster. Mine had an automotive alternator spinning backwards that was working fine until the brushes started getting worn. Might could pull it and take it to a rebuild shop.

Yeah, knew either direction works, but all the fan cooled at NAPA are backwards.

Ended up finding an alternator shop to rebuild the "airboat" alternator same-day.

Nice work!

Mine had a fan on it that spin backwards. No ill effects that I noticed for performance until the brushes started wearing.

Shoot. TradeCraft I am based there at Troutdale. I just looked at BCP for the 1st time today. I've been rocking all day and am now at my beach place. Sorry I wasn't there to help. I'm sure someone has pointed you to Dash air. Darrell Dasher is a big tire guy and will do you right. 503.720.9754

Thanks for that. I actually saw Dasher down with Doug Keller yesterday morning before I knew I had problems. They're down riding dirt bikes in southern Oregon for the weekend.

Just buttoned up the cowling and about to head north!
