Henrys Lake/Island Park

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Henrys Lake/Island Park

My family and some friends bring our trailers to Island Park every year for a week or so. This year I trained my wife to pull the trailer and I brought the Maule to Henrys Lake. So we all arrived this morning and other than the flight over Yellowstone does anyone have any info on good places near by to fly or better yet land?

Probably make a trip to Big Creek and/or Fish Lake. But some local playing would be awesome.

Re: Henrys Lake/Island Park

You bet....., the area to the west of the Henry's airstrip, follow the road through the pass, it'll open up into a huge valley with a couple lakes and not much else, I believe it is called the Red Rock Lakes area, I've also heard it referred to as the Twin Lakes. Fly far enough and you'll hit Dell, and a possible eating place not too far from the strip there (5 or 6 thousand long and paved, after a local with a G5 moved there and paid to improve it). The wide open area is fun to play around in, mostly just you and a few cows and lots of birds there.

There is also a dirt strip I first heard about from a Husky pilot, I'll see if I can google earth it, OK I'm back: it's 44 degrees 23' 01.57" N and 111 degrees 17' 06.67" W. Or at least in that general area.......... Also check out the water falls, just follow the river from Island Park to the south, they are hard to miss, it is a big tourist site so there is a road there also. The convinence store near the Henry airstrip is open again, real handy and close. The IMAX theatre in West Yellowstone, they have loaner bikes at the airport. From there it isn't too far to the Teton National Park, not bad views over that directionm in fact it's all good!

Re: Henrys Lake/Island Park

I just reread your post: if you hit the area to the west there are lots of great off airport places to play the closer you get toward Dell, maybe 10 or 15 miles out, bare hillsides, maybe a little sage brush, any slope or length you want or need. I've flown that area twice in the last two weeks, turn off your computer and start the plane! Enjoy!

This is real close to where we are camped, have you landed there? It looks like there are several places to land right there, are they airstrips or just roads?

Can you land by the lakes? Any fishing?

Re: Henrys Lake/Island Park

I landed there about 3 years ago once, not much of a challange so I havn't been back. Google earthing it today I see what you mean, and I really can't say which likely looking place it is, but it is in that general area. It was subtle, nothing"official" looking. I don't recall it being near a body of water. It was on the flats, out of the trees, and maybe 1500 more or less long, running n/s.

As for the lakes area and the fish, I can't say, don't fish myself. I did not see a single angler if that helps. I'm sure you could find a place to land and check it out. Good luck! You'll see what I mean about how remote and unpopulated it is.

Re: Henrys Lake/Island Park

Spent the last ten nights tied down at Henrys Lake while camped in Island Park. The weather didn't allow a trip to the backcountry, wind and rain daily. Still had a great time, flew everyday. Breakfast in West Yellowstone was great and fuel in Ennis was cheap and easy. Flew 11 consecutive days, which might be a record for me.

Found this strip and landed to meet the owners, real nice folks. They have owned the property for about 10 years. They own a Musketeer and cannot land on the the strip, its around 1500 feet. I took the property owner for a ride so he could at least say he had flew on and off of his own strip. They were very very welcoming of visitors. They just put up a huge shiny wind sock and the strip is North/South.
