Herding hazards

Eastern Oregon, Citabria 7GCBC herding cattle clips a wire and crashes. Fuselage looks like it could have been survivable but pilot deceased.

I'd like to keep my shoulder straps snug but can't easily reach the flap lever.

Report says herding is common with airplanes. I'd only ever done it with R22.

Re: Herding hazards

Another advantage of the energy management or crop duster turn, other than trading airspeed for altitude wings level, is that we clear the wing (fixed or rotary) before turning. Coming back around, in the return to target, we (now diving) again have to level the wing prior to pulling up over wires or approaching the ground.

Again, it is neither the fault of instructors or pilots. The official training system has simply chosen to accept losses rather than promote training in safe maneuvering flight techniques. Simply declaring it unsafe and unacceptable does not help the crop duster, patrol pilot, bush pilot, or rancher.

Yes there are advanced schools for these exceptions to normal flying. However, if you check the paperwork, the training must comply with standard training. It is the standard training and indoctrination in altitude maintaining, level, high load factor, turns that sets up these pilots for trouble.

The FAA accident investigator will make the FAA look good, assign fault with the pilot, and take no flack for neither providing or sanctioning a sufficient training program.
