HID Lights
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Installed 35w landing and taxi lights in the leading edge this weekend. Technology is cool. They weigh 1.35 lbs. and put out 540000 candle power on 3.1 amps. My airplane has a 50 amp alternator and if you turn everything on it would pop the breaker. Not anymore. I want to put them in the wingtips but the current system 50w incandescents also are hooked to the pulselight and HID's can't be pulsed yet.

jmtgt, anytime I'm usually just 5 minutes from the airport. Got a chance to try them last night. Both the taxi and landing light are pointed too low so I need to re-aim them. With a taildragger this is a compromise but with the amount of light they put out I think I can reach a happy medium. I found this
http://www.xevision.com/ that has pulse hid for the wingtips but they are not stc'd and my luck with field approvals is lousy lately. Last night on approach to RNO, with everything on except pitot heat, the ammeter showed 31 amps. That's impressive.

I installed them on Sunday myself and gave the paperwork to the IA. It took about 4 hours and maybe 1.5 pints of blood. The ballasts mount on the nose rib with 2 an3 bolts and the tough part is getting the nuts on and tight. The lamps are the same size as what you remove so they just bolt in. I got a new lens for the Sportsman leading edge and of course it's not even close to fitting. If I were to do it again I would use rivnuts and be done in an hour.
