High Cylinder Head Temps 0470R

Hi guys : I have 182L on floats and I have been noticing higher than normal cylinder temps
1-418, 2-308, 3-412, 4-390, 5-373, 6-382 with a EGT on the hottest # 1 of 1440 showing on my JPI engine monitor. I thought that new baffling would solve the problem but it seems it did not. I worries me that I have 100deg difference between the hottest and coldest.
I'm burning like 18 gals an hour as I can't lean her as the temp just get higher Any ideas ?

Cowl flaps open or closed? Cowl flap extensions installed?

Are you sure the probes aren't on the way out? Have you tried swapping probes around and seeing if the hot cylinder follows the probe?

Is your fuel flow correct for the throttle settings you are running? Have you ultrasonically cleaned the injectors lately?

By new baffles, did you change the baffle seal material, or take a closer look at the whole baffle arrangement for small leaks etc?

You checked off all the entry-level troubleshooting stuff, like timing, oil consumption, etc?

As a short term fix, and your engine model is unlikely to take it, but flying lean of peak will be a lot cooler; and it's easier on your engine too. You may need a little carb heat to help it run lean without complaining. Yes it will be slower but you're fuel burn benefits makes up for it. If you can keep it about 60% power and at least 30 degrees lean of peak, then there's zero risk of damaging the engine.

And if you don't like the above idea, try running lower RPM over-square instead. That will greatly reduce friction-heating inside the engine, without costing you much airspeed. Use the power tables in the POH to find an acceptable setting you like for vibration, for about the same % power you normally use.

Cowel flaps always open full never need extensions before. My JPI is only a few years old so I thing the probes are ok , on start up they are all in ambient temp. I been running her at 23 x 23 abd it is is really hot 80 F I run at 22 x 2250. All Baffle material was done at the annual.......we have not checked timing

Someone said it could be the cross over pipe on the induction ?

If some else out there is running a float plane with the 0470R what cly temp do you have ?

My other 182P on wheels runs in the low 300

Anything running on floats is going to run higher CHT in warm weather. I would definitely check the induction for leaks...that would run a cylinder lean, and therefore hot.

I wouldn't worry too much about 100 deg difference between cylinders.....that's not too uncommon in carbureted engines.

Check for induction leaks first.

Unless the timing was already done at the annual, it could be worthwhile checking that.

It shouldn't drift too fast, but that depends on how worn the points in the mag are, whether you have Slick mags vs Bendix, etc.

I guess it's possible that it could have drifted further back from TDC and be causing unusually high cylinder pressures - which would result it elevated CHTs, and would probably cause damage to the engine if you leaned it hard.

Just I thought, I could be way off track.
