High Sierra updates- lack of

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve been scouring SM sites, YouTube and Vimeo for wtf is going on at HS-2016, with little results. High Sierra has become the Mecca, the burning Man of the Back Country Pilots, so to speak. It is become the essence of the love of putting it down in the middle of nowhere on an unprepared piece of dirt, and having that incredible feeling of fulfillment of going places few would dare to land, and nothing so far I have found can beat that feeling.
100’s if not 1000’s of us, that are positioned at different parts of the globe, separated by thousands of miles, and those who, for reason of obligation cannot, or may not ever be able the make a pilgrimage to “our” site of celebration, Im sure are waiting like fathers in a delivery room for their first born to see what great things are happening there and are craving to enjoy the celebration osmotically.
I don’t like to be critical..Or at times being down right obnoxious, except when drinking too much rum, but I think it would be very cool to have some sort of live update feed so the rest of us can sort of feel a part of it.
Im not a big burning man fan, but those folks have got a live cam there so the people who cannot attend can see what’s going on there in “real” time for the whole event. That would be way cool if that could be set up at mad cow... dead cow or whatever. It could be a live stream embedded in a webpage with advertising to finance it’s operation. If this is not possible, have daily uploads of the day’s activities.
I think I can say with absolute certainly that everyone on here including the lurkers from all over the world, share the excitement of this great gathering. Putting this event online should be possible in our amazing “connected” world. If it takes a gofundme page to make this happen, Ill throw in the first $100 US.

I was wondering about this too. It could be that the lakebed is in a void of cell coverage.

Kevin has posted some pictures and videos of some of the events on Instagram and Facebook. Looks like the rest of us are missing a good time.

Great photos Tom!

@sidewinder, while it would be great for those us not there, like many things these days, uncontrolled/unfiltered streaming is probably a bad thing. The people they want to know about it do.... and the rest probably shouldn't be notified. :)

Got me a new belt buckle.

36 entries. After some eliminating, I got the "privilege" of going head to head with Bobby Breeden, driving a borrowed Carbon Cub. While my trusty (and noisy) hot rod 182 still proved no one can accelerate with her, he did that "slow down" thing way better and kicked my butt with a time well under 1:40. We didn't have the big digital clock up this year, but last year's times were soundly beaten. My goal for next year is to get under 1:40.

Then Kevin called Mike Patey and his mighty red Wilga back to race me for the four seat division honors. We stopped at almost the same instant, with the nod going to Mike . . .except he DQ'd for pulling a "buttonhook" power slide stop at the turnaround.

I then went to park my plane and have a stiff drink to dilute the adrenaline pumping through my veins, and missed the two seater finale, so someone else can post how it went down. When the dust settled, I believe it was Steve Henry of Idaho.

Later in the afternoon, the traditional STOL went off. Again, I'll let someone more in the know post the details. It was fun to watch!

Perfect weather, lots of very nice folks. Renewing old friendships and making new ones. Hats off to Kevin Quinn!!!

Two Skywagons duking it out in the STOL Drag-

The drags were a blast. Great Flying in the 182 Pierre! That last race between Steve Henry and Bobby Breeden was one of the best races I have ever seen... in any sport.

I did not take a single photo but here are a few that have been shared on FB. Such an awesome long weekend in the desert! Only two broken tail wheels. Jughead's talk Saturday night was outstanding and the STOL Drags left us with a new Champion, Mr. Steve Henry. Thanks to everyone that helped out and all of you that made the trek to DeadCow! Over 190 airplanes on Saturday night with over 400 folks around the campfire!

Re: High Sierra updates- lack of

I didn't think I was going to make the fly-in since I just sold my 170, and my new 180 is in for annual. My friend Daniel was nice enough to let me fly out with him in his IO-550 powered 205. Scott also took me flying in his Ponk'd 180. Thanks guys!

Here's a link to my snaps of HSF, with a few of my favorites below. Another great year and another great job by Kevin and everyone who worked so hard to make it so special.

I've never seen photos of a fly-in that made me want to go. Until now.

Awesome thread. Looks like a blast.
