Please make sure you make that information available to Paul Freeman, who runs the INCREDIBLY WONDERFUL "Abandoned and Little Known Airfields" website. Paul is the de facto online keeper of the flame for all of the abandoned and obscure airports in the US. He has put together a website that has to be seen to be believed.

Everyone PLEASE support this incredibly worthwhile historical online repository for the old airports.

There used to be a web site -I I believe it was U.S. Forest Service airstrips where it had Hundreds of landing -operations strips. Don't remember any diagrams but descriptions -locations and notes. I'd like a copy of PDF maybe a thumb drive of western US .Tell me where to send the cash . http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/aviation/av_l ... AD2000.pdf

Does anybody have a review of Galen Hanselman's books detailing back country strips in ID and UT? I've met Galen, and enjoyed being around him but haven't purchased his books. I just looked at his website and they appear to be available still and popular.

I was glad to have it available as a reference. Something to "compare" where Iv'e been against where I might like to go. Sometimes used as a quick check for your memory if not there in a long time.
As Alfred Korzybski states: "The map is NOT the territory." The map only gets you overhead using the most common two dimensions. The map does not have the depth nor tell you where the snags are as you lower into the canyon.

NOTHING beats having someone who knows the tricks and trips of a strip before going it alone, Unless you are still young and invincible.

Being a history buff - I got as much enjoyment of of the history section. Started me to collect Idaho Hist.

Seems I recall there are several publications out there. If I were just starting I would get them all - Ya never know which last little bit of data might save ya.

Re: Historic Airstrips

Hi just talked with Galen earlier this week by phone and ordered a few items from him including the Third Edition of Fly Idaho. It is now a 2 volume, all color set with like 14 strips added (2 deleted, though). I bought the package that included Baja since Oso Loco invited me along to Mexico in February.

I've been using the second edition of Fly Idaho for a long time and have pretty much worn it out so looking forward to seeing what the new one has to offer. He said he is working on one for New Mexico now.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

I have both of them. I've found a few locations to be off slightly on the GPS positions. I think they are typos. I really like the companion volumes that give the history of the strips and sorrounding area. So far I'm happy with the information and how it's presented. To me their a good value.

I would like feedback on the Fly the Big Sky volume also.

I didn't think to ask at the time. I'll post back after the new one comes in and when I figure out which are missing.

I have this 1939 document in PDF format. Here is a link where you can download it:

Also, here is a link to the USFS landing strip document that was used in 2000.

I just posted my initial impressions of the new Fly Idaho here:

https://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest/fly-idaho-third-edition-18674?p=258927#p258927

Midway and Murphy Hot Springs are the 2 strips deleted.

Pinecone:

Can't say enough good about Galen's guides. I have found them to be invaluable. I have all of his guides as well as his updates. You will get information that you won't get anywhere else. Info on the airstrip condition and safety, history of the strip, suitability for camping, hiking, fishing, activities to engage in, etc.

I would recommend them unconditionally.
