Re: Hot and heavy and underpowered

This is the the 4th or 5th time this has been posted in the past couple of days. I can't believe this crap made national news and went viral. And you guys were worried about a couple youtube vids of successful landings at Mile Hi. The press is having a field day with this one. I don't understand the human need to see carnage and gore. Now everyone who already didn't think small planes were dangerous surely does now. #-o

I watched the video, looks like he's not gaining altitude or airspeed either. Sometimes turning around is not an option-- if you're on the edge of a stall anything more than the gentlest of turns might be enough to push you over.
I found it surprising that although the camera was catching audio (you could hear the engine), no one said anything. I would have thought you;d hear comments like "she won't climb" or at least an "oh shit" or two.

Do ...

...you guys think this is for real? Just seems too pat for me. It seems that he made no effort to climb for over two miles. Maybe he couldn't but...two bounces off the ground and keeps on going for a couple miles? No comments from anyone? My kid photos my bleeding face, pokes around my chin, with such clinical calm, after a near death experience and I will rise up and kick his ass.

I am not convinced. Hard to know what to believe anymore with photo-shopping and all the technical goodies.

Bob,

It is real. It would take more then a photo-shop to convince the Valley County Sheriffs Office, the helicopter medivac and the hospital.

You must have missed the other threads on this accident as for comments, get comfortable, a bunch of free time and read on down in Accident analysis.

Shock probably has a lot to do with some of the after crash activities......

The gist is when you unfortunately do get airborne at the edge of a stall thanks to weight, density altitude or really any factor you don't have many choices.....continue on....on the hope of improvement......or sit it down in the best spot available.

Hind sight being what it is, probably should have stayed on the ground, ate beanie weenies and called it a day.

Not trying to sit in judgement of the PIC, just calling it as I see it. Hope everyone recovers in record time and without any lingering problems.

Re: Hot and heavy and underpowered

Thanks,

I had not read the other posts. Been busy "canning" a hundred quarts of veggies from my garden and other fun summer stuff. Should have looked around a bit more before commenting.

I understand the density altitude thing. Was at Custer State Park Airport in S. Dakota a few years back. Hot day. Two big guys climbed into a homebuilt and took off toward the hills...climbing maybe 50 ft. per minute. They smacked some outcroppings about 3 miles from take off.

I was just mistified that the guy in the video bounced off the ground two or three times and overflew a mile or two of suitable landing surface. But...we all...well at least I have made pretty bad judgements in my life too. Fate just let me luck out.

Glad that they all survived and lived to ....live some more.
