Hot Springs

Every now and then, I like to soak in a natural hot hot spring. Now the best would be to combine that with flying. I have flown to Bridgport, CA and mtn biked to a hot spring. Serious huffing and puffing to get up that hill.

Any BCP folks been to any fly in hot springs.

Looking for better weather also. It is snowing in Weed today.

hot springs

There are countless hotsprings in Oregon , Nevada and Idaho. I have been to many. There are quite a few in Fly Idaho.

How about some names of the hot springs along with Lat-Lon and landing surface info. How far a hike etc.

A government big enough to give you everything you want,is big enough to take away everything you have." - Thomas Jefferson

Here are four hot springs that you can land a plane within easy walking distance of:

30 miles North of Fields, OR
ALVORD: N42,32.640, W118,32.016 This spring is on the edge of a six by twelve mile dry lake. The biggest airstrip you ever saw. Well maybe not, but be carefull to only land when it is really dry. In the winter, it is frequently covered with shallow water, and even after the water dries up in the summer, the mud can swallow all sorts of vehicles. The spring is on private land, but the public is allowed to use the concrete soaking pools. The road has power lines along it, so I can't recommend that.

15 miles WNW of Denio, NV
BOGG: N41,55.332, W118,48.099 This spring is more "wild", but a great soak. You can land on the gravel road to the East of the springs.

20 miles SSE of Fields, OR
WILLOW: N42,16.528, W118,15.919 This spring has a nice pool to soak in and an outhouse. Land on the dirt road. The road can be very muddy after a rain, and there will be ruts. Watch those long props.

60 miles WSW of Denio, NV
DOUBLE: N41,03.039, W119,01.627 This spring has a nice metal watering trough for a tub. You can land on a short stretch of dirt to the north. Again, muddy after a rain.

The power lines are approximately 30 - 40' from the road - so they don't present a problem, if you're careful. Mainly, look out for any vehicle traffic. I hear that you can also land in Fields, on the road, and taxi to the gas pumps for autogas - there is one sign, which you have to avoid hitting with your wing. Drag it well, to be sure of your safe route.
Also: Thomas creek in Idaho's backcountry has some awesome hot springs, upriver, about a 20 minute walk from the strip. They're spectacular.

Fly Ranch north of Gerlach. Used to land in the meadow to the east of it with an ultralight. There was a hay truck with a boom and a rope and you could swing and splash in the 100df water. There is a hidden ditch in the middle of the meadow. Broke a prop and cut some tail wires there. Haven't been there in a few years so I don't know what the current "climate" is. One year Burning Man held thier event close by and you know what happens then...
