Yeah,

I habitually check the Johnson Creek webcam every morning. There is snow on the ground this morning.

Sigh...how many more months until June? I love the seasons too, but I have a feeling that this is going to be a long winter's wait until next year's backcountry season. :(

Well, I can tell it is winter by looking outside. The 185 has put its floats away and is on wheels. Instead of saying Eh! I say una mas cerveza, por favor. Now I look for rattlesnakes instead of bears. I paid $3.09 per gal in La Paz for av gas instead of $4.40 gal in BC. Hornitos tequila is $21 per liter instead of $43.

My day time wardrobe consists of swimming trunks, t-shirt, and flaps, not rubber boots, Carharts, and a parka. My skin is now sort of reddish brown, not butt white.

I am still swatting at mosquitos but they are tiny. The flys don't bite, but the scorpions sting.

We consider this time of year summer and from mid April till mid October is winter. Life is good at 70 degrees year round.

Now I am planning my winter float flying/camping/fishing trips. Before I was planning my Baja, mainland Mexico flying/exploring trips.

One constant, is that I read this web site almost every morning. Keep up the good stories. Ford

Ok Ford, I think we are going to have to hurt you.

I have to get back down there, but am overworked, oh well.

Someone has to pay the rent.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Not weenies, just allergic to that white stuff and cold. Looks as if Ford needs some company this winter

I guess I have to accept the "weenie" label. However, in defense of my label, I spent 35 yrs in Mammoth Lakes, the first 16 yrs full time on ski patrol (3yrs) and ski school. My feet have had enough nerds on them to last a life time. I also had a snow removal business for 20 yrs and that is a really ugly way to experience snow storms.

For dflyer, if you head back up to BC again, I live about 50 nm north of Kamloops. Visiting in Baja guarantees cold beer. Ford

I can tell WWhunter and Ford Wilson are feeling alone and isolated and want us to feel sorry for them! Just kidding...one of the best summers I've ever had was a winter in Baja.

It was only 26 deg this morning. Spent the afternoom picking rocks from where the landing strip will be. Cannot imagine where all the lava rock comes from.

We are in a rain shadow 30 miles north of Mt Shasta. We sit at 2500 ft so we get very little snow here. We get to see all the snow that we like and it is just where it belongs, in the mountains. Fun in the snow is a conflict in terms.

My submarine.

Once again, MLB and I will head for Mexico around Thanksgiving. This will be our fourth year of having our anniversary in Mexico. 11-23-1984 and they said it wouldn't last. San Francisquito, Chitzen-Itza, Alamos and now Copper Canyon. And don't forget to drain the sprinkler system and put the snow tires on the car.

If you're not scarin' yourself, you're not scarin' the crowd!

Now that winter is here in the lakes country it's time to discover more quirks on the Viking Cub (that we spent last year building) - like mislabeling the heat and defroster.

I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any heat out of the heat box by the right foot (the comforting feel and smell of burnt shoe rubber was missing - an integral part of Cub flying in the winter - and it was growing coolish) no matter how hard I pulled the knob out. Looked down at the box, flange isn't opening, good grief, the cable obviously has slipped. Sigh, freeze now and fix it when I get back. Once getting in the shop, tried pulling the defrost knob, oh - heat box flange opens... AARRGGGHHHH.... :?

How do you know it's winter?

I know it's winter...
When I look up to the stars at night, I get a face full of rain instead.
I spend too much time on the computer, and not enough time in the plane.
The metal roof makes lots of noise.
Wool has replaced cotton & silk for daily attire.
My fingers land on the airplane keys every time I put my cold hands in my pockets.
The solar panels can't keep up with the household electric load.
My knees get soaked from the plane's carpet when I finally *do* load up the old 172 to go somewhere.
And last but best, there's more time to spend with friends & family by the fireside, while the weather blasts 'round outside.
Enjoy, Berk
