How to kill an afternoon in Newport OR (KONP)?

We have a fishing trip out of Newport Friday morning but I'm planning on getting over there Thurs. morning to beat the thunderstorms we've been getting here in Idaho. If there's no fog in Newport by noon, we should have the rest of the day to explore the area. Any suggestions?

If you haven't been there before the Aquarium is great for all ages. The wax museam isn't bad either. They are right across the street from one another down on the waterfront. You can do both in a couple of hours. Last time I was there the wife and I stayed at the Hallmark and it was a great place and right on the ocean. The food was awesome and price reasonable.

As 66 said, the waterfront is fun, lots of good food.
The FBO has courtesy cars, a trip up the bay to Toledo might be fun.
The FBO also has a BBQ Saterdays at noon.

Go to McMinnville Oregon KMMV to the Evergreen air and space museum. Home of the Spruce Goose. Or KTMK Tillamook air museum. Both have great food. My favorite on the whole Oregon coast is Pacific City about 40 miles north of Newport.

I'll come have lunch with ya...Rob

I took almost all of the advice given. Went through the Tillemook air museum and highly recommend it. I'd like to get a print of the Texan flying through the hanger with smoke on for my hanger office. Had a sandwich under the wing of the Spruce Goose, I will go back with my family for a weekend. They've turned that place into an Aviation Disneyland! Blew off lunch with Rob to get into Newport VFR. I should have missed my window and had lunch instead since getting my plane out of there was a female dog. Thanks for the tips over the phone Rob, I used them this morning!

Hey Travis, glad to help out. Lunch next time. Aren't those beach clouds obnoxious?

Cheers...Rob

Sounds good. With a do-over, I'd probably get a car in McMinnville and do that one hour drive to Lincoln City. The Evergreen Museum is fantastic and the drive from there to the coast is beautiful. I envy your trees.

I brought back ONE Halibut. Quick math figures out to about $100 dollars a pound and about a pound of fillets for every hour on the boat. Before you laugh though, realize that 2 is the limit per day. I released a few little ones before I got desperate and kept a 34 incher.

I hadn't been ocean fishing for twenty years but I quickly remembered the sucky part of charter boats- you never know who you'll be stuck with for 12 hours! In my case I chose a spot near the back where the boat moved the least. Unfortunately I had a know-it-all on my right that had his own gear and a million stories I wasn't interested in. On my left was a lady that got conned into going fishing with her husband but wasn't into it. All of us had a 48 oz. weight and a mackerel except the guy to my right. He had a special glow in the dark 16oz weight, his own bait, and a tube of "tuna blood" that he injected into his bait fish.

When the captain gave the word, we all dropped our rigs at the same time and same rate and same drift 600' deep except the azzhole on my right, his 1 pounder would sink slower and usually end up wrapped around 2 or 3 lines. If the drift didn't do it, the tuna blood would draw a shark that would. He caught 4 lemon sharks on the trip which wrapped us all up. I finally suggested the obvious about the blood attracting sharks and he quit using it. When this cat wasn't pissing me off, the lady on the other side would take over. She'd let her rig hit bottom, lock the bail, and then go try to make her cell phone connection better by yelling and repeating herself behind me while her tight line leapfrogged over those of us letting line out to keep it on the bottom. As a bonus feature Every 3-5 minutes, the skoal chewing deckend would come by to my corner and jettison about 1/2 cup of spit for me to stare at :x .

The next day was a 12 hour tuna trip that I bailed on. I took the car to the air museums and had a Ferris Bueller kind of day while my buddies chummed the fish for 7 tuna between 12 guys.

And yeah, the temperature couldn't have been more perfect. Absolutely fantastic Summer climate.

I can tell you a guy who loves flying and planes. Found a reason to get out of fishing to go look at planes. Bummer about the customers on the boat. As Ron White says "You can't fix stupid"

Good day
