Hudson river
Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

I believe you can. Not sure at what altitudes, though. I flew with a friend of mine from Wallkill, New York down the Hudson to the Statue of Liberty and then back up the Hudson along the New York skyline about a year after 9/11. If I remember right, it was late in the afternoon, so the airspace was amazinly busy!

I think I recall that somtime after 9/11 some baseball player smacked into a building and after that they made a few changes. They always do somthing dumb after sombody does somthing dumb.

I believe the ceiling of the class B exclusion is 1,100 feet. I typically fly it at 800 over the George Washington bridge. I believe the frequency is 123.05 but it should be listed in the TAC chart. Fixed wing airplanes are not allowed up the East river which starts at Manhattan and flows into Long Island sound. This is where Cory crashed his cirrus. Watch for helicopters on tours coming from the city enroute to liberty. These guys think that they own the airspace and if you miss a voluntary reporting point they will let you know. Don't take any shit from these guys and enjoy the trip. I've done this route from Maine to Florida a few times but much easier now just to go over JFK at 8,000'.

Yes you can. I just did it the second week of January. The info posted in the post above mine is correct. You can go under it at 1,000 ft, or get a Class B clearance and do it at whatever altitude they will give you. We did it at 1500 ft. NY approach and LGA/EWR tower were very cool to us and gave us whatever we asked for...including a shortcut right over the top of EWR on our way to southern PA. Just be short, concise, and professional on the radio. Nothing will piss off a NY controller faster than some one clogging up the freq trying to spit out a request or answer to a question. I've got a cool little "how to" card that I'll scan and send to you if you would like it. Just PM me.

I think that is the link that I got my initial info on. The site is a little dated, but the info should be good. It was definately a memorable experience and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. In fact, it rates pretty high in the "favorite things I've done in a plane" category. It was a great way to kick off a 2500 NM x-country.

So the VFR scenic corridor where the Cirrus crashed is now closed to fixed-wing aircraft? I'm kinda curious, how long had that corridor been in use without mishap before the Cirrus incident?

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
Looks like it worked.

Do note that if you are going to circle the Lady, EWR's class B floor is 500 ft just to the west. Don't clip it. We just talked to EWR's tower and they were very accomodating. If you are planning on doing this and want to talk, PM me and I'll send you my number.

mikemike, thanks for the web site link and Grassstrippilot, thanks for the PDF cheat sheet!
I have been thinking about taking this trip and you both have provided me with great information! I feel like I can do it at night in a thunderstorm now! Watch for me on the news!

Yup,
Unfortunately they gave a new meaning to "Cirrus on the Glass"

Who cares whether you can fly down, up, or across the Hudson River? If I ever see any part of the Hudson out of my personal airplane window I know I'm at least 2000 miles off course. The only good thing about the east coast is that the majority of the US population is dumb enough to live there.
My apologies to anyone who chooses to live on the east coast...I'm sure it has qualities I'm not aware of, and god bless you for not moving west, even though you'd be welcome, but only in a socially mandated sort of way. Nothing personal...just don't move west...it sucks out here. You wouldn't be happy.

After all the bragging we did to JC in "what's your day job" ???? The one thing about east coasters that always amazes me is when they learn I'm from Cal they always ask about earthquakes and aren't I scared living here. This from hurricane, tornado ridden areas. I haven't had so much as a broken plate since I moved here from New York in l969. Yeah New orleans and Miami are much safer places to live.

Yeah - the west coast is great! A few years ago one of my dealers out there had just gone through a severe earthquake, the hills around his city were on fire and he was choking on the smoke. But he still called me up to ask how I could stand the big snowstorm we just had!

That's exactly how I feel about Californians moving to Idaho.

I was born and raised in Idaho, and I moved to California. It was the last place I could find that wasn't over-run with Californians.

And this is coming from a guy that chooses to live in California. Sounds like one of those cirrus types
