Bruce has a checkered history in the area. This is worth a read: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter ... 26033.html

Still, I do not want to see Friedman Memorial moved. Having it close to town (and Sun Valley) is very convenient.

I say let him build it and, when it tanks, turn it into a fly-in community. :D Maybe not the most picturesque setting but good access point to good flying.

Camasflyer, I've not been to Fairfield in a long time. Is there still a place there to get some grub? There used to be a family restaurant I thought.

Grasstrip

There are two places to eat right across the road from the airport. The J & J Cafe is operating in the place you probably remember and is basically diner fair, open for breakfast and lunch. The Wrangler is a burger place open for lunch and dinner. There are also sandwiches etc. available at the store.

I am sure the elk and the antelope will get use to Willis's runway if it ever gets finished. I can't speak for the native american ghosts.

And, don't forget the motel, also right across the road. I stayed there once when I got caught with no camping gear and no more day light, it basically saved my a**, I don't night fly. Thanks for chiming in CamasFlyer. And also, the gas station, a handy stopover all in all.

I get a kick out of the part in her letter that reasons among other things... it's the old stomping grounds of the "Wooly Mammoth". #-o

Re: I feel sorry for Bruce Willis

I think he was just referring to the limit they put on the attendees of the Super Cub fly-in this year. There was no limit on aircraft that could land though, nor any limit on operations. I think they figured if they limited the fly-in to a certain size, then they could allow for X number of other campers and transients.

Re: I feel sorry for Bruce Willis

This is interesting, while leaving the issue of the property owners celebrity status aside for the moment, the part, "county commissioners approved an ordinance that would allow individuals to obtain conditional use permits to build private airports on AG land," would seem to make a lot of sense. Well duhhh, what zoning designation would be better suited then AG? Around here the commercial zoned places are high dollar and small, ONLY the AG ground is at all suitable for an airstrip. I hope the injunction gets slapped down, and quickly.

The next time I see Joe Clark, owner of the giant Flying Joseph strip in relatively nearby (and rural) Custer county Idaho, it would be interesting to get his take on what Willis is contending with, and how it contrasts with what he himself went through. The fact that he isn't famous would seem to be a huge advantage, maybe? I was just by there a couple weeks ago but no one was about.

Re: I feel sorry for Bruce Willis

The new Camas County zoning ordinance, passed recently by the commissioners, is not nearly as nefarious as it seems. It does not require a conditional use permit for AG80 (ie 80 or more acres) zoned land. Willis' airstrip is on AG80 so he is good to go and I'm sure will be starting work back up in the spring. You do need a conditional use permit for smaller tracts or industrial land. Mine is on a 40 acre piece but I am grandfathered in.

Re: I feel sorry for Bruce Willis

This airstrip is pretty much built in the middle of nowhere. In fact it's built in a if you're going to build an airstrip, this is the perfect place to do it type location. You do realize this county is 1,000+ square miles with a mere 1,020 residents?

This is likely a case of "ohh gee, we never thought to build a runway here before"

This is not the case of the Boise foothills airstrip debacle: http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/loca ... 72282.html
