I'm driving to Austin if you need anything

I am going to meet my Dad in Fernley and have him ride down to Austin with me. I'll have my truck and room if anyone needs anything brought in. I will have room in my cooler and can bring some extra chairs if you don't have room in your plane.

Cool thanks for the link! I've never been to that part of NV before. Would love to fly but the drive looks pretty cool too.

50 is a great drive... Some of the best scenery in Nevada, and some pretty cool towns and people out there.

Damn good flyin' too....

Re: I'm driving to Austin if you need anything

There's some really cool roads around Austin to explore. There's some really cool trails north of Austin in the Toiyabe Range. Joe should know all those roads and trails around there. My favorite is going up into the canyon past the Iowa Canyon Ranch and follow the Iowa Creek upstream. I made it all the way up top before I ran into deep snow. Came back down. I think the road loops back to the west towards Hwy 305.

If you have time. Ask Joe how to get to Belmont Rd and check out Potts Ranch and Diane's Punch Bowl. Worth the drive (to me anyway).

Another really neat area is down through Indian Valley. It's south of Austin Airport about 25-30 miles. You go through the Reese River Valley.

Don't forget your SPOT!!

Hmmm......... I should drive down. too :-k . I've been wanting to explore around here in Idaho or the Owyhees, but still very smokey :(

One more plug for this before I load my truck. Is there any dry lake close by? My Dad is bringing his land yacht and I will have my traction kite and buggy along with several RC toys if it decides to blow.

Hell yeah there is. Hwy 722 runs southeast of US 50 just past Middlegate Station, and makes a big loop through the mountains to Smith Creek Dry Lake, and then continues on right to Austin Airport. Best hot springs around, and land sailing mecca.

Re: I'm driving to Austin if you need anything

Thanks Gump that's perfect! When driving to the airport from the West is it faster to take 772 or to stay on 50 all the way to Austin and then backtrack on 772 to the airport?

50 might be a tad faster, but 722 is a zero traffic/way cooler scenery route. If we're out wandering, we'll stop at Middlegate for beers & burgers, then hit 722. And then on to Smith Creek. I think from the dry lake to KTMT is maybe 20-25 road miles. Doesn't take long.

Well it's 130am but I made it to be Austin airport. I wasn't going to leave till early in the morning but I got a wild hair and took off at 730 last night. 50 from Fallon to Austin was a trip with no moon. Couldn't tell if I was going up or down it seemed like I was on a highway through space. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Have fun Rob :D

Joey. I just came across a brochure I have from Austin. It's for the "Gold Venture Driving Excursion". Should be able to pick one up at the cafe by the courthouse.

It's a dirt road that goes from Austin to Kingston up a big canyon. Should only take an a couple of hours, maybe 3.
