Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Hope yours goes as well as my coworkers. He got a new titanium ball and ceramic socket and physical therapy had him walking the next day and he is gliding around only complaining he didn't get it done sooner. If you had one leg shorter than the other they can use this chance to even things up too. The new technology on joint replacements blows away anything from even 10 years ago. Best of luck to you!

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Dang...
I was lying here feeling sorry for myself. Had surgery yesterday to repair a completely torn quadriceps tendon. It was ripped off my kneecap while I was doing nothing more exotic than walking on an icy trail in Zion NP. Turned around to head back and BAM!! The old landing gear folded up in a wierd way. My butt didn't even touch the ground and my clothes didn't get any dirt on them, but, wow, did I ever know that something had gone wrong! So, the ortho guy has done his best: split open the knee like a stuffed pork chop, fished out the end of the tendon, drilled holes in the kneecap, lashed the tendon and bone together with something that looked like baling wire and pulled the whole thing closed like and old boot. It's only bending about 30 degrees and they say it may take months of PT to get it back to normal. Looks like I'm a long way from that Jane Fonda manuever you have to do to get into the front seat of the Maule. BIG sigh....

Thanks you guys for reminding me that there's lots of misery out there. Good luck to all and best wishes for a rapid healing.

Dang you guys!!! Are we going to compare an show pictures? LOL
Wish I were near home. I'd post a few.
I feel your pain. I went under a semi many years ago and had a couple other problems over the years. I have over 3 FEET in total length of metal rods in my body. One on each side of my spine and one in my leaft leg from the knee to the ankle. Just recently had about 7-8 inches worth of screws removed.
Recovering from SLAP tear surgery right now and I hope everything goes well for you Tadpole...and a speedy recovery!!

Good luck to you Tadpole. There is room in the 206 for a stretcher if the timing isn't right for the Spring Fly in at Caveman. I am sure Rod would treat you like a king at the main lodge! As for me, I have been lucky. Only 18 inches of titanium and two screws in my right femur.

Good luck to you hope for a speedy & successful surgery. Your lucky in some ways, about 15 years ago I was at the Long Beach GP at the opening one skydiver had his final screwed up and hit a section of K rail about waist high doin 15-20 mph. Musta broke his back or severd his spinal cord just above his hips. EMTs got to him immediately didn't even attempt to work on him just covered him up and took him away. Do the best you can playin with you little girl now and always, they grow up fast.

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Awhile back while on a jump down in Sacramento, there I was standing on my head doing about 200 mph admireing my shadow on my friend when his eyes got real big and he just opened in a standup,I knew exactly what that meant and I opened as fast as I could,My Stiletto came out perfect and snivled for about 4 or 5oo ft.There I was in the saddle at about 400 ft.I reached up ,and being the genius that I am, tried to pull the slider down past my brakes as part of the normal routine.Slider got stuck on one brake and the other brake popped off,so now I am on a Stiletto 120 with one brake in one hand and the slider stuck on the other one so I cant get it off,Times up,one brake line in hand grabbed the riser on the other side and stopped spiraling got it straight and pounded into this farm field with the biggest dirt clods I have ever seen.Snapped my right leg off about six inches up from my heel...Tib,Fib smashed ALL bones and dislocated foot from where it was supposed to be.Still hurts sometimes while skiing but thats about it,otherwise it feels pretty good.......I feel your pain ..........Get well soon,,,,,,,,,,,, Vail :?

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

When I was in college I was pilot for the South Dakota Skydivers. 1961 Skyhawk, passenger door and seat pulled and over weight with full tanks. A jumper friend of mine had broken his leg bad enough they put an 18" rod inside his leg bone above the knee and a steel plate with screws on his arm. When he healed he went back to jumping. That summer he went to a small town north of me, I was not piloting, and he put on a jump for his girlfriend. He decided to pack white flour in the canopy sleeve to the main chute to give a white smoke look to the chute when it opened. He put too much in and when he pulled to open, with the free fall velocity that he reached and with the flour lubricating the sleeve, it opened the main canopy so fast he snapped like a yo-yo at the end of those lines. One of the lines caught his helmet and broke his neck but it did not kill him. He rebroke his arm and leg and the leg had to be pressed straight because the rod was bent inside and they couldn't get it out to set the leg. Everyone thought he was dead when he hit the ground, because he just laid there. Not in a wheel chair either, but walks with a limp.
The greatest things you will look back on that you do in your life will not be skydiving, it is just rush for the moment, it will be the time you give your daughter and family and the time you spend together and they will always have time for you. Within reason, include them in your flying and make the best of both worlds. The cats in the cradle man, cat stevens.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

When I had my accident folks were surprised it was on a demo with a larger canopy, and not my 107 or the old VX I sold from when I used to do all the swoop stuff.

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Hey Tadpole,
I got a replacement nov 08 at 43 years of age. I got my medical back 3 months later when they say you can flex past 90 degrees. They have you walking the next day after surgery and you will be saying why didn't I do this sooner! It was nothing more than taking the ortho final report and getiting a class one flt physical. If any questions give me a call.

Good Luck!

Thanks Paul. I'm thought since I have a current medical, I just self ground once I'm unable to act PIC and then I'd end up reporting this to my AME once I go to renew. Am i supposed to be letting them know about this sooner?

My sister-in-law had hip replacement in mid Jan. and is here in Las Vegas walking around casinos pretty good. Doctor told her to get to using it every day . There from Madison,Wisc., where the surgery was done. Good luck on your procedure- I've got a fake knee 1 several years ago. May have the other one done this year.

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Tadpole wrote:So, some of you may remember that I broke my hip on a jump 3 years ago. The reassembled it with 3 pins back then. I've been having lots of problems with it the past several month, extreme pain and so on.

Long story short, I have avascular necrosis. Basically the femoral head's (the ball joint part of the hip) blood supply didn't heal correctly and it wasn't restored. We knew this was a chance going in from the beginning, I just didn't expect it. So now most of the ball joint is dead and the rest is continuing to die and it has started to collapse. It's no longer a smooth ball shape, so that's part of the pain, and the reason for the popping, clicking, and snapping noises I get all through the day and night.

I'm waiting now for a referral to a joint replacement specialist up in Denver to see what type of replacement they'll do. It's looking like some newer material they expect to last 30yrs...no one's had it long enough to know for sure yet..haha. Either metal or ceramic. Some will go in the socket, and then they'll "resurface" the ball joint. But that's a bad name in my opinion. They'll lop off the dead stuff and rebuild it with new stuff. The unknown part right now is how much needs to come out.

So, that's it. Fake hip to come sometime this year...before I'm 35 even. I look forward to being out of all this pain though. Still flying when I feel good, and trying to fly as often as I can since I'll be grounded for awhile once I go under the knife.

Here's a pic. You can see where it's collapsed and no longer a nice round shape.

Jason,
You are sort of correct with both statements. Refer to 14 CFR 61.53 Prohibition on operations during medical deficiency.
(a) Operations that require a medical certificate. Except as provided for in paragraph (b) of this section, no person who holds a medical certificate issued under part 67 of this chapter may act as pilot in command, or in any other capacity as a required pilot flight crewmember, while that person:
(1) Knows or has reason to know of any medical condition that would make the person unable to meet the requirements for the medical certificate necessary for the pilot operation; or
(2) Is taking medication or receiving other treatment for a medical condition that results in the person being unable to meet the requirements for the medical certificate necessary for the pilot operation.

The easiest thing for you to do is when your orthopedist releases you back to normal activities (VERY QUICK with the resurfacing or other large size femoral head procedure), simply ask for that statement in writing. You may either show that to your AME when you go for your 5 year exam, or you may give it to your AME immediately and they can forward it on to the FAA for you. Just forwarding on this letter from your orthopedist will not trigger an FAA request for AME examination in most circumstances, given absence of other medical problems. So while you could try to decipher which conditions you can self ground and self release for, this action will take the guess work out of the process.
Good Luck!

Re: I'm getting a fake hip

Surgery went well. I was in the hospital until today, 4 days total. Had a couple issues that kept me there an extra day that were surgery / narcotic related, hip is doing fine. It's great to be in my own bed recovering now where I might be able to pull off some consistent sleep.
