Ibex Hardpan and Mineral Canyon

Does anyone on here know what the conditions would be like for some of the southern UT strips this time of year? We were thinking of heading south later this week and checking these two out.

Thanks in advance.

Last I heard, which was last week, Mineral canyon airstrip still had standing water on the runway from the record rainfall at the end of last month. I don't know about Ibex - my guess would be that it's ok, but I don't really know. Also I know that Mexican Mountain is usable, but Needles Outpost lost about 1/3 of the airstip to rain washing it out. Get a hold of the guys at Redtail Aviation in Moab for more accurate reports.

Good idea. Wow, Needles got washed out again! Hopefully they will never feel like it isn't worth it to repair the damage.

Thanks for the update on Mineral. Sounds like it may have to wait until next year.

We have about three directions we are thinking of flying so this helps. Maybe we'll run to Ibex and check it out. Ever been to Delle? We thought about checking it out on the way to Ibex. Otherwise I think we'll be heading to Denio Junction. Longer flight but a lot of places to land and check out on the way.

I have landed at Delle twice for mogas. It is a gas station convenience store about 60 NM east of Wendover on I-80. No wind sock. Some publications say that there is a flag and long hose on one of the fuel islands. No such thing.

For wind direction just cross the runway slow and check for drift. You have to push it up really close to the pumps and the hose just reaches the fill necks of a 182B.

Landing strip is asphalt grindings and is plenty smooth. The polish dogs are good and I believe that the fuel has no ethynol.

Denio Junction has been closed for quite awhile in the past but is now open for business.

Beware of bad fuel at Delle!!! Last year I got a very crappy load of premium auto gas from Delle. After I took off the plane barely ran and sputtered from the bad gas. If you have to buy fuel at Delle I would recommend filling with the lowest grade available. (I made the mistake of filling with premium, which was probably 5 years old as anyone stopping in delle for fuel is going to buy the cheapest fuel available!)

I overflew Mexican mountain two weeks ago and it was still too muddy to attempt to land. Cedar mountain was a little soft, but landable.

I always get the mid grade a Delle. The midgrade is a blend of the low and the high. The blending is done inside the dipencers. Never had a problem with there fuel. You would think that if the high test was bad, a fuil injected BMW would not make back on to the interstate.

Thanks for the input. During college I always heard of people running to Delle for breakfast. Probably because it was the closest place to do a morning run. Never went over myself but now plan to check it out.

As for Denio, I think that is the direction we will head, weather providing. Anyone know the name of the resturant there? A phone number too?

Anyone been in to Owyhee, NV (10U) , McDermitt (26U), or Rome (REO)? I did a stint on a helitack crew through this area about 8 years ago when we used Denio as a landing zone while working a fire. I remember driving by Rome and always wanted to come and check it the area. With any luck we'll have some pics to share by the end of the week.

A guy I know flew into Mexican Mountain last week. He said there was a mud hole 900' feet from the west end, but that it was drying fast. He was in a Husky by himself and landed anyway and camped overnight. Might be ok now for airplanes needing a little more room, but you never know.
